Dublin-based rock star Glen Hansard, who was considered one of the most influential musicians in Ireland, has died at 56 due to a motorcycle accident in the village of Lucan in Dublin. According to the Irish Independent, the Academy Award-winning musician, Hansard, passed away on the morning of July 29, 2026, around 4:30 am, close to the Strawberry Beds area.

The national police of Ireland, Gardaí, confirmed that Glen Hansard died shortly after the tragic accident on the R109 Lower Road. Hansard, who was catapulted to global fame after starring as Outspan Foster in the comedy-drama film The Commitments, is survived by his wife Maire Saaritsa, a poet from Finland, with whom he had a son, Christy.

While Hansard's fans and music enthusiasts are still in shock to learn about his unfortunate death, the Drive All Night hitmaker's agency shared a statement following his demise, which read:

"Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time."

The statement further added:

"The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene. As this matter remains the subject of an active Garda investigation, no further comment will be made at this time."

The Irish rock star, Glen Hansard, who began his music career at 13 by busking on the streets of Dublin, eventually became the founder of the renowned band The Frames in 1990. Interestingly, while Hansard was a popular face among Irish musicians and an influential figure in the Irish rock scene, he happened to be a close friend of legendary American guitarist Jeff Buckley.

Besides being a well-established musician and rock artist not only in Ireland, but on an international level, Glen Hansard was also an activist who advocated for homeless people and helped them find shelters by organizing campaigns, according to Evoke.

As per the Independent Irish, Glen Hansard owed a great deal to his mother, Catherine Hansard, for his successful music career, as it was she who gave him money for his first-ever music record. During a 2015 interview, Hansard revealed that his mother at the time opted for a loan for him. Glen said:

"I got to the point - and I don't how I got there - where I needed to make a demo of my own songs, so I went to Sun Studios and asked them how much it would cost."

Hansard then added:

"And my mother went to the bank manager and asked could she get the house done up. The bank manager gave her IR£3,000 (€3,800), IR£2,000 (€2,540) of which we spent on the demo."

Glen Hansard opened up about becoming a father in his fifties

The late Irish rock musician, Glen Hansard, during a conversation with the Irish Times back in 2023, got candid about being a father at the age of 52. He said:

"For 52 years I was the most important person in my own life, and then suddenly I got a complete perspective shift, and I’m absolutely loving it. To be of service to this young mind, to this young life, is just – I can’t believe I didn’t do it before now. Isn’t it true that when the student is ready, the teacher appears?"

Hansard went ahead and said:

"I was always the guy in the band, so I was just busy making my story, making my life, moving forward. I guess opportunities were there, of course, but it just wasn’t really on my list of things to do. Then I met Maire, and it was, like, oh, there’s the mother of my children."

While talking about loving his life, Glen said:

"Is this the happiest time of my life? I would say it’s probably the most adventurous, the time I feel most engaged of all of my life so far. I love this life, and I get to play to people all over the world who are interested in hearing what I have to say, people who actually pay me to do it."

As he mentioned his privilege to be able to make music the way he wants, Hansard further added:

"That’s a huge privilege. I’m not a pop star, so I’m not restricted by tunes needing to be 3½ minutes. There’s nobody in my corner telling me to shorten an album, to make it longer or to wear my hair this way, that way or the other. I get to be who I am, and that privilege is not lost on me."

Glen Hansard's son, Christy, is just 4 years old.
