An incident involving Jude Bellingham overshadowed England's thrilling 3-2 victory over Mexico in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, as broadcast footage appeared to show a green laser being pointed at the midfielder during the match. The incident took no time to gain traction online.

During England's Round of 16 encounter against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, broadcast footage showed a green laser light flashing on Jude Bellingham's face. According to reports, the laser came from the crowd as England faced a hostile environment in Mexico City.

Despite the concerning photos, sources indicate that the laser did not directly strike Jude Bellingham's eyes during the crucial attacking instances in which he scored his goals.

There has been no official confirmation of who was responsible, and FIFA has not publicly issued any disciplinary punishment as of this writing.

Laser pen failed to affect Jude Bellingham's performance

The incident had little to no effect on Jude Bellingham's performance, solidifying his fan-given nickname "Clutchingham" for his ability to score last-minute match-winning goals.

The Real Madrid midfielder opened the scoring with a diving header before adding a second goal just minutes later, assisted by Harry Kane, to give England a dominant first-half lead.

Mexico's Julián Quiñones scored before halftime, and England had to play the second half with 10 men after Jarrell Quansah was sent off after a VAR review. Despite the pressure and the delayed match, Thomas Tuchel's side secured a remarkable 3-2 triumph, leaving Mexico back at home.

Despite being an unused substitute on the bench in the Round of 16, England midfielder Jordan Henderson received a yellow card and injured his wrist during the post-match celebrations. Following the final whistle, Henderson attempted to jump over an advertising board but lost his balance and fell awkwardly.

Manager Thomas Tuchel stated that the injury appeared "really bad," while captain Harry Kane joked:

“Jordan Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s OK.”

Jude Bellingham was named Player of the Match for the third time in the competition. The Los Blancos and Three Lions midfielder has four goals and one assist in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hostile atmosphere surrounded England throughout the match

The laser incident occurred during an emotionally heated game that had already seen multiple off-field disruptions. Prior to kickoff, England's players were greeted by pyrotechnics and a live band outside their hotel, all intended to disturb them.

The team bus was reportedly doused with foam as it arrived at the stadium. The match was also delayed by around an hour due to thunderstorms in Mexico City.

Inside the stadium, England experienced relentless boos from the home audience, with reports of bottles being hurled during the game.

The build-up had focused heavily on the challenge of playing at the Azteca's altitude, which was around 7,200 feet above sea level, as well as on Mexico's impressive home record, where they have been defeated only twice in six decades, the last time in 2013.

The win only marked Mexico's third home defeat in the Azteca in the last six decades, making it one of England's most significant away wins in the last couple of years.

Thomas Tuchel's side will now face Norway in the quarterfinals, after Erling Haaland scored twice to send Neymar and company back home earlier in the day.
