Elon Musk calls OpenAI's actions related to Canadian school shooting "troubling" )

Elon Musk, who has been a vocal critic of ChatGPT, took to X on February 20 to react to OpenAI not revealing school shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar's interactions with the AI platform to the police. Musk wrote "troubling" under a post by Katie Miller, who reported the news.

OpenAI said that the company considered alerting Canadian police last year about the shooter's interactions with the AI platform. The company mentioned that last June, they identified the account of Jesse Van Rootselaar via abuse detection efforts for "furtherance of violent activities." However, it was later concluded that at the time, the account activity of Steelar did not meet a threshold for referral to law enforcement. The company banned Steelar's account in June 2025 for violating its usage policy.

18-year old Jesse Van Rootselaar was identified by the Canadian police on February 12. The police officials noted that Jesse died from a self-inflicted wound after attacking the remote mountain community of Tumbler Ridge.

The school shooting incident was Canada's deadliest mass killing since 2020. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) revealed that Van Rootselaar had also killed her 39-year old mother and an 11-year old stepbrother before the attack.

The 8 victims included a 39-year old teacher, five students, three girls, and two boys.

What has OpenAI said about the Canadian school shooting

OpenAI, after learning about the Canadian school shooting, reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with information on Van Rootselaar and their use of ChatGPT.

An OpenAI spokesperson issued a statement saying,

"Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the Tumbler Ridge tragedy. We proactively reached out to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with information on the individual and their use of ChatGPT, and we'll continue to support their investigation."

As per the police, Van Rootselaar has a history of mental health contacts with the police. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark, in an e-mail statement, said that the police team is conducting a "thorough review of the content on electronic devices, as well as social media and online activities." Clark added that "digital and physical evidence is being collected, prioritized, and methodically processed."

Jesse's mother confessed in Parent Life Network Canada in 2015 about serious concerns about her child's behavior, as per a screenshot shared on social media. Jesse's mother had mentioned that her child had grown obsessed with gore videos.

Jesse Van Rootselaar's motive behind the attack remains unclear.
