Eva Marie Saint welcomed her first child, son Darrell, in 1955, shortly after winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in On the Waterfront.

She was pregnant when she attended the 1955 Academy Awards. After being announced as the winner, she accepted the Oscar from Frank Sinatra and poked fun at her pregnancy while giving her acceptance speech.

Two days later, Darrell was born.

Her expanding family would come to play an increasingly significant role in her life.

Following the success of On the Waterfront, Eva Marie Saint chose not to accept studio contracts or pursue any projects to immediately follow up her breakout performance.

At the time, she explained that she wanted time to get to know her newborn son.

Eva Marie Saint later welcomed her second child, daughter Laurette, in 1958.

Despite the demands of her family responsibilities, the actress continued to develop a respected reputation throughout her career.

She went on to star opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest and appeared in numerous films, television shows, and theatrical performances over many years.

In 2024, Saint celebrated her 100th birthday. Ahead of the celebration, she shared with People how she wanted to commemorate her centenarian status and what her secret to her old age is.

“I’m looking forward to spending my 100th birthday in Los Angeles with my dear, dear family. Four generations of family members will be gathering together from Los Angeles, Chicago, Santa Barbara and San Francisco.”

She further shared:

"I certainly don’t feel 100 years old. I continue to take walks out in the fresh air, like watching baseball — especially the Los Angeles Dodgers, and enjoy time with my family and friends. A good life.”
