Mehdi Hasan has slammed Donald Trump's recent comments on Iran. The latter threatened to annihilate the Middle Eastern country amid the ongoing conflict.

Donald Trump spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 22. He highlighted various topics during his speech, including the ongoing conflict in West Asia, especially Iran. He appeared to threaten the country and said that he had to make a decision about the conflict.

During his speech, the POTUS said:

"I have a big decision to make - will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again? Do I drive them into hell with no chance of survival and no hope of future greatness or generations?"

Journalist Mehdi Hasan slammed these comments from Trump via a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

"For shame. The president of the United States goes to the United Nations and threatens genocide against a UN member state in front of the world. This is where we’re at."

Just 10 minutes into the US President's speech, many of the Iranian delegates left the hall. Notably, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas were not present in the Assembly hall during Trump's speech. They are, however, in New York for the UN General Assembly.

While he appeared to threaten to annihilate Iran, Trump also said that they have held multiple talks with the country's leaders. He also said:

"We think that the situation with Iran could end right after the midterm elections, maybe before. I don't know. You never know."

The midterm elections in the US are set to take place on November 3 this year. Amidst this, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff also stated that talks between the US and the Middle Eastern country have taken place. He wrote in a post on X on Tuesday:

"Today, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, we engaged in lengthy talks with the Iranian delegation through the mediators, who shuttled between the two sides throughout the day. They successfully completed a round of discussions that we hope will prove constructive and promising. The mediators will continue their work."

However, Trump launched numerous attacks on the Islamic Republic and Iran during his speech, labeling them “the number one sponsor of terror.” He said that the country has spread “carnage and chaos”. He further stated:

“I will never allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."

The US had launched multiple airstrikes on Iran earlier this year. The US President alleged that they had initially offered Tehran to end their nuclear programmes in exchange for economic help, but Tehran denied. He said that they discovered and "obliterated" the country's nuclear programmes in their strikes.

He also said that, along with this conflict, the US is also working to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
