Freddie Jackson, the Grammy-nominated R&B singer behind hits such as You Are My Lady and Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake), has died at 70.
The iconic crooner died Monday, three days after his 70th birthday, according to a statement shared by his family on his official Instagram account. His family did not disclose a cause of death.
“Freddie was more than a legendary voice. He was a kind, generous soul who loved his fans, his family, his friends, and his music with everything he had. For decades he gave us the songs that became the soundtrack to our love stories, our celebrations, and our most treasured memories. That gift will live on forever.”

There is no widely reported record of Freddie Jackson being married. The singer also did not have children, something he addressed in a 1994 interview while discussing his album and the song My Family.
At the time, Freddie Jackson talked about the role of fathers in making sure that they take responsibility for their children. He mentioned how he had noticed many men having difficulty maintaining contact with their kids.
The Tasty Love hitmaker also explained why he didn't have a child himself. According to the singer, raising a child required dedication, and he wanted to "practice what you preach."
He added that there were personal matters in his life he needed to resolve before taking on that responsibility.
"Most people think I only make songs for the ladies but on this album there's one, 'My Family' that addresses guys' problems. The family is so separated and split today and guys are walking away from their responsibilities, if they have kids. I've been around a couple of fellas who for whatever reason can't really be with their family. That song is appropriate for guys who want to pick up the phone and say, 'Look I want to come by and see my baby. Let's talk this over.'"
Freddie Jackson confessed growing up in a broken home: “Sometimes my life is very confusing”
He added, in his interview with Mark Berbiers, the founder and owner of Soulandfunkmusic.com, that the “important thing is the child.” He added that he knew what growing up in a dysfunctional home felt like.
"I am concerned with the family. I was born and raised in Harlem. I know what a broken home is about. I know what it's like to be brought up with mommy being mommy and daddy. It's a big responsibility to have a child and you have to dedicate a lot of time."

The singer continued:
"That's one of the reasons I probably don't have a child myself because you have to practice what you preach. Sometimes my life is very confusing and before I embark on that there are some things I have to fix with Freddie."
Freddie Jackson's past comments offered a rare look at how he viewed family and parenthood. While his music often focused on romance and relationships, he revealed that his own life was more complicated.
The artist became one of R&B's prominent voices during the 1980s, earning recognition for his romantic ballads and smooth vocal style. Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake) became one of his signature songs, followed by other hits including You Are My Lady.

In Freddie Jackson's family's statement, they remembered him as more than a celebrated singer, describing him as a kind and generous person who loved his fans, family, friends, and music.
“To everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage: thank you. You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always.”
