Former NHL player Claude Lemieux passed away at the age of 60 on May 28. The body of the four-time Stanley Cup champion was reportedly found at 3:23 a.m. inside the warehouse of his furniture business in Florida. The news of Lemieux's death was announced by the NHL Alumni Association via a social media post on Thursday. Since then, Florida authorities have shared additional details about the death of the former hockey player.According to a statement shared by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office with PEOPLE magazine, Claude Lemieux died by suicide. The statement noted that Lemieux was found "hanging" by his son."Deputies responded to a suicide at the Andros Home showroom. After not returning home, the Decedent was found hanging in the rear warehouse by his son," the sheriff's office shared.Authorities said the site where Claude Lemieux was found dead had been "secured for evidence preservation" by the Violent Crimes Division Homicide Unit.USA Today also reached out to the medical examiner's office to confirm the cause of Lemieux's death. The office, in response, said that information about Claude Lemieux was "exempt from public records." The outlet claimed that the statute that the medical examiner's office cited was enacted in 2024 to exempt several records related to suicide victims.Lemieux's death came just days after he carried the torch during his former team, Montreal Canadiens’ matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes on May 25. In an Instagram post, he wrote:"Sometimes life has a brutal way of reminding you to appreciate what you have before it becomes a memory... I’ll miss you dad."President Trump also shared a tribute post on Thursday and called the four-time Stanley Cup winner a "true legend of the game."
