Michelle Yeoh shared her honest opinions recently about Wicked: For Good not getting nominated for this year's Oscars. Yeoh currently has one Oscar win under her belt for Best Actress in 2023. She shared her opinion in a report published by Variety on February 12.

"I'm not surprised. I am in shock!" she said.
"I really am," she added.

The sixty-three-year-old actress played Madame Morrible in both the Wicked films. She acknowledged that the first film received critical appreciation and added that the sequel, too, deserved its moments.

"I think sometimes the problem is that people think, 'Oh, you already got so much with the first one, let other people have a chance.' But then it feels like, 'No, come on!' It's such a beautiful, well-made movie. Paul [Tazewell] for costume design, hair and makeup. If you compare it [with contenders this year] it should be there," she continued.

Yeoh added that Jon M. Chu and Alice Brooks deserved to be nominated for their work on Wicked: For Good.

"It's not the replica of the first one. It's more elaborate and there are many more new destinations in Wicked: For Good. So I was truly, truly very disappointed," she explained.

As per a report shared by Us Weekly, last year, Wicked received a whopping 10 nominations at the 2025 Academy Awards. The movie is based on the hit Broadway musical.

Michelle Yeoh made Oscars history in 2023. She was the first Asian Best Actress winner. As per a report shared by Goldderby, Merle Oberon was a nominee in 1936 for The Dark Angel. Oberon was of South Asian descent, but she hid her ancestry.

Michelle Yeoh gave an interview to People Magazine about the overwhelming recognition she got in 2023. She said:

"You go from shock to bewilderment. 'Wow, is it me? How can it be me?' Because I've worked with so many amazing actresses who should have had this privilege, and so I am very grateful to be given the opportunity to sit at the table and to be seen,"

She said of the attention she received thanks to Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Michelle Yeoh also talked to Stephen Colbert back then. She discussed her Oscar nomination during the interview, saying:

"You fluctuate between feeling very shocked and very overwhelmed with joy, but thinking, 'How can I be the first?' Because I know of so many amazing actresses and actors where we've stood on their shoulders, and now so many beside me and more ahead of me."
"So I would love to see [the lack of award recognition for Asian actors] be a thing of the past, where this is a norm that you see faces like ours up there being nominated and being given equal opportunity to play those roles," Yeoh added.

Michelle Yeoh went backstage to the Oscars press room after the show in 2023. As per a report shared by Deadline, she had zeal for the way she and Everything Everywhere All at Once moved the inclusivity needle.

"This is actually an historical moment so I really have to thank the Academy for acknowledging and embracing diversity and true representation. This is something we have been working so hard towards, for a very long time…I'm still here today," she shared.
"Finally after 40 years I get this. It just goes to show we will win. That's what we're doing. Don't give up, because once you give up that's a loss. Don't let anybody put you in a box, don't let anybody say you are past your prime," Yeoh said while holding up her Oscar.

Michelle Yeoh delivered a message of triumph and encouragement as she addressed anyone who might be losing momentum in their struggle to achieve their dreams. She spoke to people who feel sidelined in a less-than-inclusive environment.

"We need this because there are so many who have felt unseen and unheard, not just in the Asian community—this is for the Asian community—but for anybody who's identified as a minority. We deserve, to be heard, we deserve to be seen, we deserve to have opportunities so we can have a seat at the table. That's all we are asking for. Give us that opportunity. Let us prove we are worth it," she said.

This isn't the first time Michelle Yeoh has shared her opinions about Oscar Snubs. As per a report shared by Variety in 2024, the actress shared her perspective when Barbie was excluded from the award.

“Joy and disappointment, it seems to go hand in hand,” Yeoh said.
“There’s not enough nominations to go around. The only take is it’s so competitive out there and there’s no guarantee because you’re not the only voter," she added.
