MC Lyte is honoring the memory of Rob Base after he passed away, recalling his immense contribution to hip hop music.

In an interview with TMZ in New York, she said that his loss was very close to her heart as he made a difference to the world in more ways than his greatest hits.

For the Cold Rock a Party hitmaker, Rob Base was one of the genre's standout MCs and spoke about witnessing his work up close while sharing stages with him over the years.

"He's one of the most prolific MCs with one of the most important contributions to hip hop music and culture ever."

MC Lyte also talked about being in contact with Rob Base, as well as her efforts to trail those who weren't.

"Honestly, I've been trying to track people down that wasn't in contact with him. But we had several shows together throughout the years and, you know, we kind of came up at the same time within hip hop. So it's a sad loss."

MC Lyte has recently been officially inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2026, alongside fellow hip hop legends Queen Latifah and the Wu-Tang Clan.

In her quick chat with TMZ, the rap legend reflected on her achievement.

"We're breaking down walls and creating other avenues. And, thank goodness, there's a voting body that recognizes hip hop and the cuture and our contributions."

MC Lyte also left a message to those who haven't been given the same recognition, such as Mariah Carey, who hasn't been acknowledged by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

"Definitely, there's still time. And Mariah is one of my favorites. I mean, a long history of hits and inspiring and influencing the culture and music. Everybody gets their turn."

Rob Base death: Family confirms rapper's passing

On May 22, Rob Base passed away after privately fighting cancer, and only four days after he celebrated his birthday. He was 59 years old.

In a social media announcement, the family celebrated Rob Base as a "creative force," as well as a devoted family member.

"Today, we share the heartbreaking news that hip hop legend Rob Base passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, surrounded by family after a private battle with cancer. Rob's music, energy, and legacy helped shape a generation and brought joy to millions around the world."

The family added:

"Beyond the stage, he was a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will never be forgotten. Thank you for the music, the memories, and the moments that became the soundtrack to our lives."
