How to Train Your Dragon 2 is an upcoming film in the action drama genre. It's a live-action adaptation of the namesake 2014 animated film. The 2014 film was directed by Dean DeBlois, who also wrote the screenplay. Universal Pictures will be releasing the live-action adaptation theatrically on June 11, 2027. Here's the official synopsis as per IMDb:

"Follows the astonishing adventures of Hiccup, a Viking who befriends dragons, the flying creatures while finding and bonding with Valka, his long-lost warrior mother as they continue their journey."

Ted Lasso actor Phil Dunster has recently joined the film's cast.

Phil Dunster will be playing the role of Eret in the upcoming film How to Train Your Dragon 2. The character is dubbed as the "finest dragon trapper alive." Game of Thrones actor Kit Harrington had voiced the character in the original animated film. Dunster is known for his role in projects like Ted Lasso, The Devil's Hour, Murder on the Orient Express and Judy.

The film will also star Gerard Butler, Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn. How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a sequel to 2025's How to Train Your Dragon.

Marc Platt and Adam Siegel have produced the film under the banner of Marc Platt Productions. Lexi Barta and Dean DeBlois are the executive producers.

In a Cinemablend interview, director DeBlois spoke about the sequel:

"I think about anything involving the masses of dragons. If we’re having a battle on the beach with, you know, hundreds of dragon traps and dragons that are flying out of Valka’s Mountain and attacking from Drago’s forces.I think about the scale of that battle and trying to execute it in live action and it feels kind of overwhelming"

He added about the Dragon Sanctuary:

"That's gonna be challenging. I've been thinking about [the wing suit] as well. Because it needs to feel right and spontaneous and free. And it can't feel restrained in its movements. That'll be a tricky one to figure out. Those guys are geniuses. You give them a challenge, and they’ll come up with six different solutions."

The original animated film was released in 2010 and it was adapted from Cressida Cowell's namesake 2003 novel. It was a critical and commercial success and was followed by a sequel.

The live-action sequel will release on June 11, 2027.
