Hasbro has jumped into the Trump DHS controversy in which the administration has been targeting the Sikh community. For those who don't know, the DHS posted on its official social media account an AI generated parody poster featuring a Transformers-type character. This fake movie had the title of "Transformers: Age of Deportations".After targeting DC's Green Lantern franchise, the Trump Administration has targeted another sci-fi franchise in Transformers. Describing Optimus Prime (the leader of the Autobots) as a symbol of justice, the company went on to reveal that the DHS used the character likeness without any permission.This isn't surprising, because one of the biggest criticisms of Generative AI technology is that it regularly skirts copyright laws. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Transformers franchise has fallen prey to the copyright infringement of Gen AI technology. The company's public statement read:"Optimus Prime is a beloved character who represents humility, leadership, compassion and justice. Hasbro is aware of the recent posts using his likeness. These posts were done without permission and do not represent the Transformers brand or Hasbro."Therefore, it isn't surprising that DHS took down the posts, once the issue of copyright infringement was raised. Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, who hails from Illinois, also released a statement condemning these posts, saying that the DHS was fuelling xenophobia:“Our government should never use its power to demonize people or suggest that their faith, heritage, or identity means they do not belong here. Yet in an official social media post styled as a movie poster, the Trump Department of Homeland Security depicted a man labeled “Mr. Singh” as the villain, told him to “get off our roads,” and warned him to “self-deport or find out.”He further continued:"More than 160,000 people in the United States share the surname Singh. When the government demonizes a name carried by so many Sikh families, it fuels xenophobia and casts suspicion on an entire community. Sikh and South Asian Americans are as American as anyone.
