Actor Timothée Chalamet has opened up about an intense and unexpected moment from the sets of Marty Supreme. A non-professional actor allegedly threatened Chalamet during the production of a conflict scene at a motel. The actor revealed it during a Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. on Wednesday. Speaking about the moment, the actor said:

"I find it really thrilling."

In the Q&A sessions, Timothée Chalamet told Robert Downey Jr. that he found it thrilling to work with non-actors, and then he went on to tell him about the moment:

“I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors … I find it really thrilling to work with [them], but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them.”

He added that he was trying to make the non-actor angry with him:

“And I’m really getting in the guy’s face and I’m really trying to get him angry with me. I was saying to Josh [Safdie], ‘He’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me.'”

Chalamet claims that the man later advised him not to push him any further, stating that he had just been released from prison after serving 30 years.

“I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to fuck with me. You don’t want to see me angry.' I said to Josh, ‘Holy shit, who do you have me opposite, man?’”

Robert Downey Jr. calls Marty Supreme a "generation-defining" performance

On January 14, during a conversation at the Directors Guild of America in Hollywood, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that he had contacted Chalamet through FaceTime after he watched Marty Supreme and loved his acting in the movie.

Downey Jr. praised Chalamet’s performance, caliing the movie a “decade-defining film” and stating that Chalamet’s portrayal of Marty Mauser is “generation-defining”:

“To me, this is a decade-defining film, and I think it is a generation-defining performance.”

Downey added that Marty Supreme is a movie that spectators should acknowledge as important; he continued, adding that they should "plant a flag and say, 'This matters.'"

Timothée Chalamet, in turn, thanked Downey and called him a “long-time role model” and said that Chaplin was an inspiration for his own work in A Complete Unknown. Downey went on to say that his performance was “an astonishing achievement.”
