On October 18, 2026, Selena Gomez put up a video on her Instagram Stories. In the clip, she talked about nicotine vaping and what it did to her voice. She said the change is permanent. Over the years, people have noticed shifts in how she sounds. A lot of the comments used to tie those shifts to lupus or the meds she takes for it.

As reported by People, the post went up on Sunday. Selena Gomez said she vaped nicotine a lot. She called quitting hard. She also said she has stopped and wants to stay stopped. According to Us Magazine, she has been photographed with a vape before. Those shots include times when she was getting ready for her wedding to Benny Blanco, as well as a few other public moments.

In the video, Selena Gomez said:

"I'm not gonna be able to change my voice. I vaped nicotine a lot. Nicotine is so hard to quit, and I think I just wanted to say, if you’re going through it or if you’re even trying to vape, it's just not worth it. It's so stupid. It changed my voice. So if you guys don't like listening to my voice, that’s totally understandable. I don’t mind. Just don’t listen to it. I am really excited because I stopped, and I just hope I can keep it up. It's really hard, but I know if you are going through something, you can get through it too. It su*ks."

The video was posted on X pretty quickly. Soon, several users shared their reactions.

One user wrote:

"I can’t lie I get her so much"

More users chimed in and shared their thoughts on X. Some became emotional over this revelation. Few said the message should be taken seriously.

However, several others shared a different reaction on X. Some called out the singer for vaping after a kidney transplant.

Selena Gomez looks back at earlier voice comments and recent days

Back in December 2025, Selena Gomez answered questions about her voice on an Instagram Live. As Page Six reported, she said her throat sometimes swells from the inside. She added that sometimes things just happen. She also said she does not really care what people think about it. That live event happened on December 16.

She has talked about her health for years. According to BBC News, in 2017 she had a kidney transplant because of lupus, with a friend, Francia Raisa, serving as the donor. As per guidelines noted in the Clinical Kidney Journal, doctors generally recommend that patients stop smoking before and after a kidney transplant because continued use can affect outcomes.

On October 14, 2026, she hosted the fourth annual Rare Impact Fund Benefit in Los Angeles. As Billboard reported, she said she and Benny Blanco marked their first wedding anniversary. They stayed home, ate cake, and watched their wedding videos in pajamas. The night raised money for youth mental health work through the fund.

Around the same time, Selena Gomez posted a short TikTok. According to USA Today, she lip-synced a line from the Jonas Brothers song Burnin' Up while wearing a red dress and heels at the benefit. The clip cut back to her appearance in the song's 2008 music video.
