Liza Minnelli revealed that the academy forced her into a wheelchair while presenting next to Lady Gaga at the 2022 Oscars in her new memoir, Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!"

Liza Minnelli's moment from the 2022 Oscars went viral at the time, since she visibly looked uncomfortable in the wheelchair, and stumbled with her words, prompting Lady Gaga to reassure her and say, "I got you."

In her book, Minnelli alleges that she expected to be seated in a director's chair to have closer access to the teleprompter, but the Academy put her in a chair at the last minute to prioritize her safety.

In an excerpt of the book released by People, Minnelli said,

"I was inexplicably ordered - not even asked - to sit in a wheelchair or not appear at all. I was told it was because of my age, and for safety reasons, because I might slip out of the director's chair, which was bulls***. I will not be treated this way, I said."

"I was heartbroken," Liza Minnelli claims that Lady Gaga demanded that Minnelli be put in a wheelchair

In her memoir, Kids Wait Till You Hear This!, Liza Minnelli revealed that her co-presenter, Lady Gaga, with whom she presented the Academy Award for Best Picture, supported the Academy when they put her in a wheelchair at the last moment.

"My co-presenter insisted that she would not go on stage with me unless I was in a wheelchair. I was heartbroken."

Minnelli mentioned that sitting on the wheelchair affected her ability to deliver her lines on stage,

"I was much lower down that I would have been in the director's chair. Now I couldn't easily read the teleprompter above me. How would you feel if you were wheeled out, against your will, to perform in front of a live audience, and unable to see clearly?"

The actress mentioned that she found Gaga's behavior performative and ironic since when she stumbled over the words, Gaga went to her side and leaned down to say, "I got you."

After the ceremony, People reported that Minnelli's publicist claimed that Lady Gaga specially requested that Liza present the award with her. While specific details about Liza's health issues are kept private, it is known that the actress battles with viral encephalitis.
