A Democratic Party politician-turned-social justice activist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, aka AOC, has lately been all over the internet after she announced that she has decided to freeze her eggs.
According to People, AOC, 36, who is also a congresswoman and an advocate for racial equality and universal healthcare, recently took to her Instagram and, through several IG Stories, opened up and discussed how women considering or planning to freeze their eggs have very limited information.
While Ocasio-Cortez got candid about her decision to freeze her eggs on a public platform, she explained how she wanted other women to have access to her experience. AOC also mentioned the political risk she is undertaking by publicly discussing something extremely personal. However, in one of her IG Stories, AOC said:
"We are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause ... whether you want to plan to have a family, whether you don’t plan to have children biologically."
The youngest woman to be elected to the American Congress, Ocasio-Cortez, who is not yet married but engaged to his long-term romantic partner Riley Roberts, a professional web designer, explained that she would rather choose to discuss the problems faced by women, knowing she will be judged for her actions and that her decisions will be scrutinized.
According to People, AOC, who first came across Roberts while studying at Boston University, talked about how women have to worry about public opinion, whereas men don't have to worry about public scrutiny, and said:
"You know, men run for office ... and people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy’s running for office. How old is he? Is he going to want to start a family?’"
She went ahead and added:
"People don’t go down those rabbit holes and fixate on them for men in terms of their decision the way that they do for women."
Ocasio-Cortez further noted:
"If people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them."
AOC expanded on her decision to go public about freezing her eggs

While speaking with ABC News on August 9, 2026, AOC explained the reason for her decision to publicly announce the news of freezing her eggs on social media. Ocasio-Cortez said:
"In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy. I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalize them."
