Journalist and presenter Katie Couric mocked Republican Louisiana Senator John Kennedy on social media. On Tuesday, Kennedy told former Special Counsel Jack Smith at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing:

“You make me want to throw up in my mouth.”

A netizen named Susan Wright @wrightgirl29 posted on Threads:

“I f**king detest Senator John Kennedy. Anyone else feel the same?”

Couric sarcastically commented:

“He makes me want to throw up in my mouth.”

Actor, singer, and comedian Josh Gad responded to Katie with the words, “I love you.”

Another Threads user posted an image of Kennedy from the Senate hearing and captioned it:

“Sen. John Kennedy’s Forrest Gump schtick really backfired yesterday, huh?”

Democratic Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona commented underneath it and mocked Kennedy by writing, “Sen Hee-Haw.”

Exploring the heated exchange between John Kennedy and Jack Smith

John Kennedy was among a few Republicans who questioned Jack Smith at the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Smith famously led two criminal cases against Donald Trump in 2023.

Kennedy accused former President Joe Biden and his White House staff of telling then-Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump and asked Smith if he was aware. The latter said that he had no knowledge of it.

“Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy? How about the Easter Bunny?” Kennedy asked Smith.

The latter replied:

“I do not. I no longer believe in the Easter Bunny.”

Senator Kennedy further asked whether the former Special Counsel thinks that late labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa “died of natural causes.” Once again, Smith responded with an “I do not.”

According to a video shared by C-SPAN, the exchange heated further when John Kennedy asked whether Jack Smith and his team subpoenaed phone and toll records of Congress members as part of Smith’s investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots.

Smith answered that they only used toll records, particularly the “non-content” ones. Kennedy asked whether those records were directed only at Republicans or Democrats. This is when Jack said:

“If President Trump had reached out to Democrats to… the toll records that we sought were relevant to the investigation and they were Republicans…”

When John Kennedy accused Jack Smith of “violating the speech and debate clause,” the latter clapped back that it was “incorrect” and that he and his team complied with the clause. Kennedy also questioned Smith’s educational background and asked whether he indeed studied at Harvard Law School, and Jack clarified that he studied “constitutional law.”

The Senator also asked the former special counsel whether he informed the judge about his intention to seek the records and he answered his own question that he didn’t because the judge wouldn’t have allowed it. Jack Smith asserted he sought “non-disclosure records” but admitted that he did not tell the judge.

“But you are unbiased? You have no personal feelings?” Kennedy asked Smith.

This is when Kennedy also made the viral remark that Katie Couric later reproduced on Threads.

Republican Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt also went viral for calling Jack Smith a “dirtb*g.” In response, Democratic Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar claimed Smith “deserved an apology” from Schmitt.

Other GOP Senators, including Ted Cruz of Texas and Darline Graham of South Carolina, also grilled Jack Smith at the Senate hearing.
