In the midst of their prolonged court battle, details of a claimed $6 million settlement between Kim Kardashian and Ray J became public. The agreement, which allegedly restricts both parties from speaking about their past s*x tape scandal, has drawn renewed attention as both sides continue to deny claims in court.

In April 2023, Kim Kardashian and her mother Kris Jenner reportedly signed a "confidential Settlement Agreement and Mutual General Release" with Ray J, whose real name is William Ray Norwood Jr., and his mother, Sonja Norwood, in April 2023.

According to the reports, the agreement sought to settle “all past, current, or future claims, disputes, causes of action, defenses, and alleged losses” related to the s*x tape scandal.

The agreement stated that neither party would "disparage or impugn the character, reputation, integrity, honesty, business or business practices" of the other. Since The Kardashians airs on Hulu, the contract also stated that Ray J would not hold Disney or other platforms accountable for any connected claims.

Ray J claims a $6 million payout and breach

According to Ray J, he received $6 million as part of the agreement, and if any party violated the terms and conditions, there would be financial repercussions.

He further claimed that just one month after the arrangement was finalized, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner addressed the s*x tape on their Hulu reality series, violating the agreement.

In the ongoing legal battle, Ray J has filed a countersuit, claiming that Jenner and Kardashian have "spent two decades peddling the false story" that the footage was made public without Kardashian's consent.

Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner deny allegations

Kim Kardashian has responded by vehemently refuting Ray J's accusations. In a sworn statement, she said that claims that she and her mother orchestrated the tape's release are false. In a sworn declaration filed on Tuesday, Kardashain wrote:

“His claim that I had a plan with my mother and others to release a sex tape, defraud the public, and file a ‘fake’ lawsuit against the porn company that released it to ‘create buzz’ is a lie.”

She continued:

“My family and I are not part of a criminal enterprise; we have not conducted racketeering activity, nor have we profited from racketeering activities as the defendant claims.”

Similarly, Kris Jenner has denied any involvement, saying:

“Defendant’s allegation that I was in charge of the release and commercial exploitation of my daughter Kim’s sex tape is absolutely false.”

She added:

“I did not file a ‘fake’ lawsuit against the porn company that released the tape of my daughter in order to defraud the public and create buzz ahead of the tape’s release, as he claims.”

Jenner also claimed that she has been taking therapy because of this. She said:

“The emotional distress defendant has subjected me to because of his awful lies about me and my daughter.”

The mother and daughter have denied claims of being involved in a racketeering conspiracy together.

The legal issue is a component of a larger defamation lawsuit that Kardashian and Jenner have filed against Ray J, alleging that he made false allegations about them.

Ray J's legal team pushes back

Howard King, Ray J's attorney, has contested Kardashian's claims, calling them "demonstrably false" and speculating that they would constitute perjury. In a statement released to TMZ, he said:

“If Ms. Kardashian is so concerned about demonstrating to the State Bar that she possesses the requisite moral character to be admitted to the Bar, when and if she passes the bar exam, she should not be committing perjury.”

King continued:

“Her sworn statements that she did not steal money from Ray’s mother and that she and her mother did not orchestrate a false narrative about the release of the s*x tape are demonstrably false and could subject her to criminal perjury prosecution.”

At the beginning of March, another attorney of Norwood, Jackson Trugman, argued that the mother-daughter had failed to deny the racketeering claims and that their lawsuit should be dismissed.

Lawsuit alleges a pattern of defamatory statements

Ray J defamed Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner last year with comments intended to "revive his own fading notoriety," according to Kardashian's lawsuit. The lawsuit says:

“Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over 20 years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to plaintiffs’ names and exploit their prominence for personal gain.”

The lawsuit continued:

“Ray J’s defamatory statements about plaintiffs are part of a broader campaign of harassment designed to generate publicity for his flailing career and satisfy his acknowledged animosity toward the Kardashian family.”

The mother and daughter also claim that Norwood's alleged pattern of “antagonistic behavior” is not recent, pointing to his 2013 track, I Hit It First, which they say was widely perceived as a negative reference to Kardashian.

The lawsuit also references a live discussion on May 30, 2025, in which Ray J told TMZ’s Harvey Levin that he might believe such allegations if they were about the Kardashian family, while speaking about Sean Combs' racketeering case:

“If you told me that the Kardashians was being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.”

Additionally, the lawsuit also highlights a livestream on Twitch on September 24, 2025, where the rapper allegedly intensified his claim, saying he was preparing a RICO case against the Kardashians:

“The federal RICO I’m about to drop on Kris and Kim is about to be crazy.”

Weeks later, when the recording of the livestream was played in court, he added:

“The feds is coming, there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s worse than Diddy. It’s worse than Diddy.”

Kim Kardashian and Ray J were in a relationship in the early 2000s. Their s*x tape was recorded back in 2003 and was released by Vivid Entertainment in 2007, shortly before the release of Keeping Up With the Kardashians on E! in the same year.

The company claims that it obtained the tape from a third party. To date, the origin and release remain a subject of dispute.
