Charles Kelley, co-lead vocalist and founding member of country music group Lady A, has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer.

The artist broke the news in a video posted to his Instagram page on Sept. 29.

In the clip, he details how health problems he experienced have led to the diagnosis. The caption read:

In the video, he revealed:

“Hey everybody. Just wanted to give a quick update on some health issues I’m dealing with.”

The Need You Now hitmaker explained that he broke some ribs unexpectedly. Upon undergoing a number of blood tests, one of the tests revealed that he had cancer.

“I had [a] couple random rib fractures that happened, which sparked my doctor into having me do several different blood tests. And one of the last blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma, and it’s rare.”

Lady A’s Charles Kelley expresses positivity despite the diagnosis

Charles Kelley acknowledged the seriousness of the diagnosis but expressed optimism about his treatment and outlook.

He noted that there has been an improvement in medical treatment within the last few years, and he felt positive about the future.

“I’m young, I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will say, have just come so far, even in the past five years. Even life expectancy just far exceeds what it used to be and, I don’t know, I feel really hopeful. I really do.”

He added that he “can still work,” noting that performing is “where I belong.”

“I think physically I will feel like myself. I'll have tough days, but you know, I wanna keep working. Even going out last weekend after knowing the news, it was like this is where I belong."

Multiple myeloma is a cancer affecting plasma cells, a type of white blood cell found in bone marrow.

While these cells normally assist the body in fighting infections, cancerous plasma cells grow uncontrollably and disrupt the production of healthy blood cells.

Further, symptoms differ and treatment varies based on different aspects, including the patient’s condition and the stage of the disease.

In Charles Kelley's update, he also brought up his sobriety journey.

“Just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing, and it takes the power away from it a little bit that we want to let y’all know what was going on. But we’re going to get through it. You know, I think in sobriety it’s all about one day at a time and that we’re not in control, and so that’s the way we’re looking at it.”

Charles Kelley—one-third of Lady A, alongside Hillary Scott and Dave Haywood—has not gone into further details regarding his treatment in the video.
