Conservative political commentator Matt Walsh critiqued Matthew McConaughey's call to vote for independent candidates in the upcoming midterms.

On Sunday, Matthew McConaughey posted a video on X, asking people to consider voting for independent candidates. According to Fox News, McConaughey's call drew mixed reactions on the internet. The Daily Wire host Matt Walsh also shared his reaction to the Oscar-winning actor's plea in an X post. Highlighting a comment from McConaughey's video, Walsh commented:

"'That’s not indecision. It’s judgment'... 'That’s not competition. It’s a scrimmage.' This is the most ChatGPT speech I've ever heard. Why? You're Matthew McConaughey. You have a very distinct and recognizable way of speaking. Why outsource that to AI? I don't get it."

After alleging that Matthew McConaughey's speech was AI-generated, Matt Walsh further commented below his own post, writing:

"LLMs haven't existed for all that long and already human communication, especially on social media, has become distinctly more bland, shallow, and cliche-ridden as people outsource their thoughts to AI."

What was Matthew McConaughey's appeal to voters?

In his video, the Magic Mike star pushed back against the idea that an "independent vote is a wasted vote." He asked people how the "unwasted vote" had been working out for them. McConaughey clarified that he was not endorsing any specific candidate or party. He added:

"I am here endorsing two things, fairness and reality. See, I believe in a fair fight and a fair fight is not just two fighters throwing the same punches at each other for 50 years. Fair fight is when the fighters who ought to be represented in the fight are actually in the fight."

Calling independents the number one political identity in America, Matthew McConaughey insisted they "belong in the fight" as a "real and potential winner." The actor went on to explain more about the political identity, saying:

"Independent does not mean you're middle of the road. Independent is the original road. Before there was ever a Republican or a Democrat, there was an American. Our birth certificate is not the Declaration of Compromise; it is the Declaration of Independence. And a true independent is not a fence-sitter, Mr. or Mrs. In-Between, 'I don't know how I feel.' No, a true independent is not even against the R's or the D's. A true independent takes the best of both. And that's not indecision; it's judgment."

Further in his speech, McConaughey stressed that the current Congress is one of the narrowest and said that in such scenarios, independents who don't caucus with either party are not a minority but rather "the majority maker," with no bill passing without them. Dubbing independents "leverage," McConaughey said:

"Think of the I's as the tollbooth between an idea and a law. Every bill coming from the left or the right has to stop at that booth and answer one question. Does this make sense to the middle? The extreme stuff can't pay the toll, and pretty soon both parties learn to write laws for where most of us actually live."

The Interstellar star concluded his message by urging voters to study the candidates on the ballot and see "if they represent you." Matthew McConaughey also noted that he was not advocating for a third party to replace the other two, but rather for "a permanent check to keep them both honest."
