Norway's King Harald V passed away on August 28, 2026, after battling several health issues at the Oslo University Hospital early in the morning at around 6:35 am. He was 89. According to the Independent, King Harald V, who sat on the throne for over three decades, had been struggling with multiple health problems, which led to his admission to the hospital after they became worse.
King Harald V, who ascended the throne in 1991 following his father King Olav's death, was on antibiotics as he was suffering from a bacterial blood infection. Previously, he had also undergone surgery for bladder cancer and had a pacemaker fitted too.
Following King Harald's passing, he was survived by his wife, Queen Sonja, son, Prince Haakon, daughter, Princess Märtha Louise, and his six grandkids. While he was one of Norway's most popular Kings, Harald was also related to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, as they interestingly shared the same grandparents. However, following his death, King Harald's palace released a statement, which read:
"It is with deep sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald passed away today. King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, August 28 at 6.35 am."
The palace alerted Norway's citizens on August 27, 2026, that their king was in a dire situation as his condition became extremely severe, encouraging his wife Queen Sonja and son Haakon, who was already acting as a temporary ruler, to cancel all engagements.
As King Harald V's death was confirmed by the palace, Norway's Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre, addressing the unfortunate news, shared a statement, which read:
"It is with deep sadness that I have received the news that His Majesty King Harald V has died. A whole nation is in mourning, and the people of Norway are left with a deep sense of gratitude for a long life in the service of Norway."
The Prime Minister further added:
"For more than three decades as monarch, Harald V demonstrated an unwavering faith in the Norwegian people. He helped us to see the best in ourselves – and in one another."
Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf also shared a few kind words for the late King Harald and wished his son Haakon good luck, as he will succeed to the throne. King Carl said:
"Throughout the years, King Harald has been a good friend to me, my family, and to Sweden … I wish my dear godson Haakon, who now succeeds his father as head of state, success and good fortune."
Norway's King Harald V delivered a heartfelt speech in favor of LGBT rights
According to the Independent, in 2017 the late King of Norway, Harald V, by using his ceremonial platform, delivered an emotional and sincere speech addressing the LGBT community, speaking in favor of their rights. During that speech, he also mentioned the predicament of refugees in Norway and said:
"It is not always easy to say where we come from, to which nationality we belong. Home is where the heart is. Norwegians are girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and boys and girls who love each other."
He further added:

"My biggest hope for Norway is that we will manage to take care of each other, that we can build this country further on trust, solidarity, and generosity."
