Rep. Nancy Mace pushed back against Barack Obama's claim that Iran did not have a nuclear weapon because of his deal.On Saturday, former US President Obama held a campaign rally in Detroit ahead of the midterms. During his speech, he took aim at Trump and his administration for high gas prices. According to a video of his address shared on his YouTube channel, Obama argued that the current administration's actions were "directly responsible for rising costs." He said that Trump made a "series of bad decisions" and blamed him for starting an "unnecessary war.""Of course, Iran didn't have nuclear weapons. We had curbed their nuclear program because I put in place a deal that everybody acknowledged had kept them from getting nukes. I didn't have to fire a missile. I engaged in diplomacy," he said. For those unaware, Obama was talking about the JCPOA, which his administration signed with Iran in 2015. However, Trump later withdrew from the deal in 2018, per CNN. At the time, Trump called the agreement "defective at its core."On Monday, GOP lawmaker Nancy Mace, who herself voiced opposition to the continued military conflict with Iran, shared her reaction to Barack Obama's claim in an X post. Mace posted:"I don't agree with the Iran war, but I also don't believe in revisionist history. Obama's comments are complete nonsense. Iran never possessed a nuclear weapon - before his deal or after. The JCPOA was a temporary pause with sunset clauses that left Tehran’s enrichment infrastructure intact, legitimized their nuclear program, and handed them a path to a nuclear bomb after 10 to 15 years. It also unlocked tens of billions in sanctions relief that funded the regime’s terror proxies. 'Everybody acknowledges' it worked? Basic facts do not. Temporary diplomacy that enriches a terrorist regime isn’t strength - it’s weakness and it's a lie."During his campaign rally in Michigan on Sunday, President Trump justified his decision to withdraw from the JCPOA and defended his actions against Iran. He alleged that the JCPOA was a "road to Iran having a nuclear weapon." He added:"It was the worst agreement and the most dangerous agreement I've ever seen. And we obliterated Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity with Operation Midnight Hammer and Operation Epic Fury."Trump claimed that the US has "defeated" Iran militarily and financially and said that Washington is now ensuring that Tehran "will never have" a nuclear weapon. He went on to claim that the war would end "quite soon."Barack Obama says Iran is in a better position than before the war startedIn his Saturday speech, after crediting the JCPOA with keeping nukes away from Iran, the former POTUS questioned how the ongoing war has benefited the US. He said:"Look 7 months later, how's that war going? Our allies and bases have been attacked. American soldiers have been killed. Hundreds of Americans have been wounded. We've run down our stock of missiles dangerously low. And this is the thing. Iran now has veto power over the Strait of Hormuz, where oil goes through to get to the world. So, they're in a stronger strategic position now than before the war started."Obama stated that the ongoing war with Iran is the "reason" for high oil and diesel prices and stressed that it is not over yet.Later in his speech, the former president also lashed out at Trump over his tariff war with Canada.
