Kim Kardashian went viral after making fun of her own bar exam experience in the first campaign for UPDATE, the caffeine-free energy drink she co-founded. The ad, which was posted on Instagram on July 23, featured Kardashian mocking some of the internet's most popular jokes about her, including plastic surgery speculation and her failed attempt at the California bar exam. The ad received praises, one user writing:

“Really raised the bar on self-aware marketing.”

Kim Kardashian's ad earned plaudits online, with many viewers congratulating Kardashian for embracing criticism rather than ignoring it. The advertising also acts as the most recent push for UPDATE, which distinguishes itself from traditional energy drinks by employing paraxanthine instead of caffeine.

Kim Kardashian trolls herself

The advertisement begins with Kim Kardashian standing behind a podium at a mock press conference before removing her sunglasses to reveal reading glasses underneath.

She begins by answering one of the questions she claims she receives most frequently:

"People are always asking about all of the work I've gotten done. Not that type of work."

She continued:

"They always ask, 'Kim, how do you do so much? Kim, how do you keep going? Kim, are they really real?'"

As she finishes her line, the camera pans briefly to her chest, confirming long-standing suspicions about her looks. When a reporter asks what her secret is, Kim Kardashian responds:

"No secret. Just an update."

When a reporter asks what her secret is, Kardashian responds:

"There's no secret. "Just an update."

Later, she joked that the beverage was:

"Formulated by a team of leading experts, none of whom are me."

The commercial then cuts to a museum-style exhibit in which Kim Kardashian sits within a glass display case surrounded by stacks of legal papers, as people watch her like an art project. Attorney Gloria Allred appears and asks:

"Did she even ever pass the bar?"

Kardashian replies:

"No, I didn't pass the bar. I raised it."

The campaign was widely praised across social media, with many users applauding Kardashian for embracing criticism rather than shying away from it. One user wrote:

"Kim really raised the bar on self-aware marketing with that energy drink drop."

A user applauded Kim Kardashian for using one of the most discussed parts of her legal journey as a memorable marketing hook for UPDATE:

"She’s so iconic. lmao idc how yall feel, this bitch is legendary. lmao and yes, i’m saying this as a swiftie. i gotta give the b*tch her 10’s."

However, not everyone interpreted the commercial in the same manner. A user wrote:

"She failed and now she’s trying to make the most out of it because everyone makes fun of her for not passing."

Many others believed the strategy had paid off. A user wrote:

"We all have to give her her 10s. She ate. Iconic."

Another added:

"I’m gagging wait she ate that I’m sorry."

Another viewer pointed out the campaign's wordplay, commenting:

"Didn’t pass the bar…raised it and canned the energy. Iconic."

A user praised the advertisement as one of Kardashian's best advertisements to date:

"Honestly this might be her best promo."

Meanwhile, another user shared her experience:

"No way I was just in the store yesterday looking to try a new energy drink that will rival my love for Alani and picked up a Champagne colored Update without even knowing it was Kim’s."

What is UPDATE? Kim Kardashian's new energy drink and why she joined?

UPDATE is a caffeine-free energy drink co-founded by Kim Kardashian that makes use of paraxanthine, the primary metabolite produced by the body when caffeine is broken down.

According to the brand, the beverage is intended to give smooth, consistent energy without the jitters, crashes, or sleep disruption associated with regular caffeinated beverages.

In addition to paraxanthine, UPDATE contains Alpha-GPC, which is a popular supplement promoted to improve cognitive performance; L-theanine, an amino acid that has been linked to improved focus and tranquillity; methylcobalamin (vitamin B12), which promotes nervous system function and energy metabolism; and finally, Sucralose as a sweetener.

The drink is also advertised as containing zero sugar, zero calories, and zero artificial flavors or colors.

Kardashian told People that she played an active role in crafting the advertisement and purposefully included humor. She said that they loved:

“Sprinkling in fun easter eggs, some humor, and a bit of a wink.”

Kim Kardashian also revealed why the brand resonated with her:

"For me it comes down to being intentional about what I put into my body and my day. That’s actually a big part of why UPDATE resonated with me in the first place."

She added:

"It helps me stay focused, balanced, and present, no matter what my schedule looks like."

Describing why she joined, as she explained what separated UPDATE from other energy drinks:

“It’s about feeling good. Focused, balanced, and productive without the jitters or that crash later. That’s exactly how I think about wellness, so becoming a co-founder and helping build something that’s actually redefining what energy looks like has been amazing.”

Kim Kardashian revealed that she often drinks UPDATE before exercising:

“I really love taking one before a workout too it gives me that little extra boost, especially after school drop-off when I still have a full day ahead of me.”

She added:

“The little consistent things make the biggest difference — how I start my morning, what I eat, what I reach for during the day. I’m really intentional about all of it.”

The drink is now available through retailers like Walmart or online via Amazon, where it is priced around $2.99 per 12-oz can or in 12-packs. As of now, only four flavors are available: Berry, Grape, Peach, Mandarin, and Pineapple.
