Senator Bernie Sanders took aim at President Trump after he co-signed a voluntary self-regulation pact with top AI executives. On Tuesday, Trump hosted a luncheon at the White House to discuss artificial intelligence. Several tech leaders, including Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Jensen Huang, Dario Amodei, Sundar Pichai, and Greg Brockman, attended the meeting, according to Forbes. Trump and the top executives of six major frontier AI companies signed a voluntary agreement to establish safety standards for developing agentic models. Later in the day, the president attended a press briefing at the White House alongside the tech CEOs.During the press interaction, a journalist asked the POTUS why the “world should not be concerned about AI” and “why there shouldn’t be guardrails.” The president responded:"Because we have people that love our country and love the world."The reporter pressed further and said, "It requires more than love, doesn't it, sir?" Trump retorted:"No, it requires this [pointing to his head], and they're the smartest people in the world."Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has been raising concerns about potential risks from AI, reacted to Trump’s response on why no guardrails are needed. In his Wednesday X post, the Vermont senator wrote:"Trump says we don’t need ANY guardrails on AI because his oligarch friends Musk, Bezos and Zuckerberg 'love the world a lot' and will 'self-police.'... Really? You’re asking us to trust the people who stand to make trillions from AI to regulate themselves?"The independent lawmaker also posted a picture from Tuesday’s White House luncheon, where major tech bosses were present with Trump. The picture also mentioned the reported net worths of the top tech entrepreneurs seen in it. Alongside the picture, Bernie Sanders penned:"Thank you, President Trump for bringing together the Oligarchs who run our country. While working families struggle to survive due to your disastrous policies, they are now worth over $1.7 trillion, including: Elon Musk: $920 billion... Jeff Bezos: $368 billion... Mark Zuckerberg: $250 billion... Jensen Huang: $200 billion... Obscene."Bernie Sanders recently introduced legislation seeking a ban on artificial superintelligenceAmid the ongoing debate about concerns related to AI, Bernie Sanders, along with Democratic Congress member Greg Casar, introduced legislation titled the “Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act” on September 23.The bill seeks to permanently ban the development of artificial superintelligence. The two lawmakers also proposed pausing advanced AI development until a federal AI regulatory body becomes functional. The proposed legislation also suggests establishing a “cabinet-level” federal Department of Artificial Intelligence. Bernie Sanders' proposed bill also lays down a provision for a jail term of up to 20 years for those who attempt to violate or circumvent the prohibitions mentioned in the proposed legislation. The press release for the bill included a statement from Bernie Sanders, which read:"Scientists have been clear: AI is an existential threat to humanity. It must be treated as such. This legislation will permanently ban the development of artificial superintelligence and would put in place an immediate pause on advanced AI development until we have clear safety rules in place — developed by the most knowledgeable scientists in our country. Congress must act now before it is too late."On the other hand, Trump has pushed back against slowing down AI development. On Tuesday, the president also signed an executive order to officially change Artificial Intelligence’s name to "Super Intelligence."Also read: “It’s not enough”: Sen.
