Ellen DeGeneres is facing criticism on social media after donating $5,000 to a fundraiser for Matthew Wright, a former executive producer of her talk show who recently died at 52.

The host's contribution appeared among the top donations on a GoFundMe page established to help cover Matthew Wright's funeral and memorial expenses. The fundraiser had a $50,000 target but had nearly doubled its goal as of Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Following Ellen DeGeneres’ $5,000 donation, social media users questioned the amount she gave, with several calling attention to her donation in posts about the fundraiser.

The internet platform X lit up with various comments about the comedian’s offering.

“A donation is generosity not an obligation…the entitlement is insane,” one wrote.
“I don't care for Ellen DeGenerate. But she gave money. She didn't have to give any. Leave her alone,” another opined.
“He worked for her for 16 years as an executive producer n somehow it’s Ellen’s fault ? Come on,” an X user commented.
“Back in the spotlight for 2 mins and is already getting cancelled again,” an internet user shared.
“I hate a b**** like this. She knows d**n well it wouldn’t even make her blink to cover the entire cost, but she intentionally gives a little 5k,” one claimed.
“These rich are so greedy,” one tweeted.
“This lady will never learn or evolve,” another remarked.

Ellen DeGeneres honors Matthew Wright in heartfelt tribute

Matthew Wright died suddenly but peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Oct. 30, in Los Angeles, according to the GoFundMe page. He previously worked as an executive producer on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

The organizers remembered Matthew Wright as a generous friend who offered support and companionship to the people in his life.

“Matt wasn’t just an overachiever professionally; he was the most thoughtful, the most genuine, the most honorable soul.”

The page continued:

“He gave more to his friends than they could have ever asked for – advice to count on, a shoulder to cry on, a couch to sleep on, a party hat to try on, and luckily, a camera roll full of selfies to look back on.”

The tribute also included a message about how Matthew Wright wanted people to approach life, ending with his reminder to “don’t forget to course it out.”

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres also paid tribute to her show’s executive producer in a heartfelt video posted on her Instagram. She tearfully described Matthew Wright as an “amazing” and “funny” person.

“God, he made me laugh. He would surprise me with things that he did all the time. He was smart. He was kind. Everyone loved him. I loved him. And it’s just shocking.”

The host added that she would miss him while describing Wright as the “glue” of the team.

“We’re going to miss him. He is and always will be the glue to our entire family at The Ellen Show.”
