Britney Spears shared a series of cryptic Instagram posts in which she appeared to reference criticism, gossip, and her desire for privacy.

In a post she made on May 29, the pop icon addressed unnamed "mean girls," using her social media alter ego, writing:

"If you're one of those mean girls pointing and laughing and looking at your phone in the audience just look up today… River sends you guys a message!!!!!!!!"

For context, River, or River Red / Xila Maria River Red, is Britney Spears' pseudonym she adopted on her social media accounts. She began changing to these monikers in 2023.

In another Instagram post, where the Lucky songstress features herself dancing by the poolside, she reflected on a period when she lived outside the United States.

"When I moved out of the country for a while I changed my name for some reason and the mean girls stopped laughing!!!!! D**n I miss it there."

Britney Spears also spoke about sensing negativity from others, writing about the feeling of "too much chatter" happening behind someone's back.

But even with that, she stated that she would send love to them while hoping they could feel her smile.

"When you get that awkward, weird feeling you can actually start to feel perhaps too much chatter is going on behind your back… it actually effects [sic] people… I still send them love but most importantly…"

The I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman hitmaker further touched on media coverage, expressing a wish for greater respect for what she described as her "unbelievable and miraculous spiritual journey."

Per the pop legend, she still has hopes that outlets will stop revisiting embarrassing moments from her past.

"I hope they feel my smile… the media has been a bit much in my opinion and I hope they can respect my unbelievable and miraculous spiritual journey… I'm so excited to embrace my journey and hope they stop showing embarrassing things from my past. I just bought the most adorable high heeled sandals for summer… its the little things you know… god bless."

While the posts prompted speculation among fans, Spears did not identify any specific individuals or events, leaving the meaning of her comments open to interpretation.
