"Show more compassion": Dolly Parton's sister Stella calls out "insensitivity from strangers" following country icon's death

Dolly Parton’s sister, Stella Parton, is speaking about the grief her family has faced following the death of the country music icon while also condemning the way they’ve been treated by people online.

The 77-year-old singer-songwriter shared a message on Instagram on Friday, Sept. 4, to thank everyone for the support that they’ve received after the death of Dolly Parton on Aug. 25.

Stella Parton stated that every member of the family deals with the tragedy in his or her own way and requested everyone to be compassionate during their period of grief.

“Sadly, because of the way our lives have been lived in front of the public, we have no choice but to be subjected to incredible pressure and insensitivity from strangers.”

Stella Parton added that her family is no different from anyone else when it comes to experiencing suffering and grief.

Stella Parton expresses worries about AI-generated material amid Dolly Parton’s death

One of her major worries is the sheer volume of AI-generated content and misinformation floating around the Internet after Dolly’s passing.

According to Stella Parton, the content was hard to digest and very hard to overlook and accused some people of capitalizing on the Parton family tragedy.

Despite her frustration, Stella said those spreading misinformation will eventually move on to another story.

“There is a tremendous amount of AI and endless garbage being posted everyday and it’s been challenging to absorb and or ignore. As time passes, those who are in the business of exploiting the loss and tragedies of others on a daily basis will move on to the next stampede and endless misinformation.”

Dolly Parton’s sister went on to say that the late songstress would be “surprised and delighted” by the love she and her family received following her passing.

“She loved her fans and the public in general. That is the reason she chose not to express her opinions on a lot of things like politics, religion, and individuals in the public eye. She knew as well as anyone what a negative vortex that could turn into which is nothing but a huge waste of positive energy.”

Stella Parton’s message comes as fans around the world continue to mourn Dolly, whose death prompted tributes across the entertainment industry.

The I Will Always Love You singer passed away on Aug. 25, 2026, after a brief, private battle with cancer. She was 80.

Meanwhile, the cancer’s specific type remains undisclosed.

At the time of her death, her family released a heartfelt statement through People, in which they praised the generosity and kindness she had shown throughout her life.

"Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope, and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand."

They continued:

"Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly's unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact."

Her death comes a year after her husband of 60 years, Carl Thomas Dean, passed away in March 2025.
