Elon Musk has slammed CNN's article about a new statue in London's Trafalgar Square. He labeled the outlet's headline "racist" because it spoke about the artwork being a rare black statue at the venue.Earlier this week, a new statue was unveiled on the Fourth Plinth at Trafalgar Square in London. It will be on display for the next two years. Titled "Lady in Blue", the artwork is part of the public art commission initially launched by the Royal Society of Arts. It is built around some historical landmarks like Nelson’s Column and Landseer’s Lions."Lady in Blue" is a black woman in a blue dress who is moving forward. Made by New York-based artist Tschabalala Self, it depicts the future. It is one of the very few statues out of thousands in London that depict a black woman. CNN shared an article about this piece on Thursday, September 10.An X (formerly Twitter) user named Daniel Concannon shared a screenshot of the article with an alleged original headline. It stated:"London's newest sculpture is not another White man"The outlet appears to have changed the headline now. However, Elon Musk commented on Concannon's post, slamming the original headline, writing:"Super racist headline. Easy to tell, as the inverse would never be allowed!"Meanwhile, Self opened up about "Lady in Blue" and said (h/t BBC):"My work Lady In Blue will bring to Trafalgar Square a woman that many can relate to. She is not an idol to venerate or a historic figurehead to commemorate. She is a woman walking forward into our collective future with ambition and purpose. She is a Londoner, who represents the city's spirit."The statue is made using bronze and has been patinated using a pigment from a semi-precious stone called Lapis Lazuli. Moreover, it shows a woman of color, which makes it even rarer. This led to Elon Musk slamming the outlet.Amid this, Tschabalala Self said that representing a black woman wasn't the only purpose of her artwork. She explained:“It’s not that speaking about blackness minimizes the work, because I don’t believe that to be the case. It’s just that I don’t think that’s the focal point of the project. I also feel like when people enter the work through that framework, they’re already starting a process of reduction because they have come to name and define the figures by their identity politics.” Notably, one of Self's past statues was vandalized. Her statue named "Seated" was installed in Bexhill-On-Sea in England, but some vandals sprayed white paint on the black woman. She said that she was "very upset" when it happened.However, Self said that the statue also worked in a way, as it highlighted the atrocities and violence real people face as well. She wants "Lady in Blue" to further progress such conversations and said that it could be "greater education of all parties involved."
