On September 24, 2026, Billboard published Joe Jonas's account of a boat accident from a vacation in Portofino, Italy. He told the story on the September 23 episode of The Morgan Stewart Show. Joe Jonas said he was moving from a yacht to a smaller tender to take the group to a waterfront restaurant when a wave shifted the smaller boat, and he slipped into the gap between the two vessels.
Joe Jonas was traveling with his girlfriend, Tatiana Gabriela. Host Morgan Stewart and her husband, Jordan McGraw, were also present with him. They had been out on a crewed yacht with a chef on board. To reach the restaurant on land, guests had to leave the yacht and board the restaurant's tender.
Joe Jonas said the sea was rough when the tender pulled up next to the yacht. He stepped across first, with a first mate guiding him. He described the moment this way on the SiriusXM show.
"It sounds like the bougiest problem. But it was terrifying. As I take a step, I think a wave came in and it pushed the boat far out from the yacht. But then I slipped and fell between those two boats."
The first mate reached for Joe Jonas and went into the water with him. Joe Jonas came up still dressed, phone in his pocket, right between the yacht and the tender. People were telling him to head for the yacht ladder. But he avoided the stern engines and went for the tender instead. He tried to climb on and slipped back in.
"I must have hit my shin or something… and then I fell back in."
Joe Jonas got onto the smaller boat on the next try and rolled in soaked. Stewart saw it from the yacht and later said she thought a boat might hit his head. Joe Jonas said the first mate asked if he was all right, and he said he was. It did not really hit him until later. About an hour in, at the restaurant, he told Gabriela how it felt.
He shares the two daughters (Willa, 6 and Delphine, 4) with his ex-wife, Sophie Turner.
"I finally came down from the anxiety and I looked at Tati and I was like, 'That s— was really scary. Like that really spooked me for a while.' I also wanted to call my kids right away. I was like, 'I just need to call them. I need to see them. I need to see their faces.'"
He said the transfer could have gone worse for anyone in the group.
"You realize it could've been any of us. It could have been really bad. It was the best outcome of a bad situation."
Joe Jonas said the incident made him realize how quickly a routine moment on vacation could become dangerous.
