"They just can't do it anymore": Michael Rapaport reveals Howard Stern Show's fantasy football league segment is over

The Howard Stern Show fantasy football league has reached its end after nearly two decades, according to comedian Michael Rapaport.

The announcement was made during the Thursday broadcast of his I Am Rapaport podcast, in which he reminisced about the longstanding fantasy football feature segment of the podcast. The 56-year-old comedian told listeners:

"It's done."

Michael Rapaport lamented about the end of what he called the best and most popular fantasy football league ever. But he didn't give any additional information or a reason for the removal of the segment. Instead, he said:

"I must admit publicly that the Stern Show Fantasy Football League is now defunct. They just can't do it anymore."

Michael Rapaport also looked back on his own role in the competition, taking pride in helping turn the league into a widely discussed part of the show. He said:

"I took that [league] from the bottom to the top, made it a viral sensation that people ask me about every single day."

For the comedian, this makes the scrapping of the Howard Stern Show fantasy football league segment feel like the end of a notable chapter.

"It has come to an end."

Howard Stern Show's staff layoffs

Michael Rapaport's revelation arrives months after reports of the Howard Stern Show's major staff exodus. The changes have fueled discussion among longtime listeners about the future of the program and its familiar features.

Back in July, staff members were informed during a Zoom meeting that the program would switch to broadcasting just one new episode per week.

At the time, Howard Stern was on his Labor Day vacation, and the new format would apply upon his return.

According to sources, the host would keep most of his core staff. Therefore, he didn't require additional production staff since the airing of episodes would now be minimized. One insider said:

"He just doesn't need that much content anymore."

Nonetheless, after the above-mentioned Zoom meeting, the employees affected by the layoffs received severance packages based on their length of service to the show.

Meanwhile, as the series premieres on Sept. 17, with only one new episode being aired per week on HBO Max, Michael Rapaport didn't wish to make any comments regarding the matter.

"That’s not my place, nor do I have any information as to how that's playing out, why that's playing out, what that’s going to look like."

Howard Stern had signed a new contract with SiriusXM in December 2025 before layoffs took place.

As per the host, the new contract gave him more flexibility despite working continuously.

"I am happy to announce that I have figured out a way to have it all. More free time and continuing to be on the radio. I do like my days off. You know me, I'm never bored. I'm busy every minute."
