Ted Cruz has reacted to an 83-year-old woman being euthanised allegedly without her consent. The woman's granddaughter has alleged that The Pearl care home in Ontario, Canada, didn't follow the proper guidelines before the procedure.Brigitte Stegemann died on July 10 due to MAiD (Medical assistance in dying). However, her granddaughter, Brigitte Kranendonk, has alleged that the doctors and nurses didn't follow the proper procedure. She claimed that her grandmother could not have passed the cognitive test done to ascertain whether a patient is of sound mind to give consent to MAiD.Kranendonk explained the entire scenario in an interview with the Daily Mail. Stegemann was suffering from Stage 4 stomach cancer, but she had previously stated that she didn't want MAiD. Kranendonk alleged that a few months later, when she was away, doctors called her to tell her that they had booked an assessment for MAiD for Stegemann.She said that the first assessment was done by the time she returned. She further alleged that during the MAiD process, a nurse, who wasn't wearing gloves, poked her grandmother multiple times to put in the IV. She said that it led to a lot of blood loss on Stegemann. She was later administered the "medicine," and she died 10 minutes later. Texas Senator Ted Cruz reacted to this report on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, September 20, writing:"This…is…evil."Meanwhile, Kranendonk alleged that during the cognitive test, her grandmother gave multiple wrong answers. When asked about her siblings, she said that all of them were dead, but two are still alive. She also alleged that the doctors didn't explain the process to Stegemann properly, never mentioning the word "death". She alleged that the nurse said:"She explains MAiD to my grandmother by saying: 'We’re going to give you medicine, you’re going to feel at peace. And I just want you to know that you won’t have a bowel movement'."She added that she still hasn't seen the documents with her grandmother's signatures regarding the consent. An Instagram account with the handle @escapingcanada shared a video of a couple sitting during a hike. The man largely spoke in the video and said:"Three years ago today, Canada left my wife to die and rot in the Canadian healthcare system. When she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, they left her with no hope. They sent her a pamphlet on how she could kill herself on MAiD in the mail. And they forgot about her."He said that he and his wife then moved to the US, where she is currently being treated.
