On August 23, Dr. Dre confirmed using AI in his interview with Variety. He referred to AI as an additional tool in music. The CEO of Apple Beats added that the people who face trouble creating usually see AI as a ‘threat.’ Dr. Dre said:

“I think the only people that see it as a threat are the people who have trouble creating.”

He said that he had asked a few people about their views on the matter. Dre went on to summarize their response as:

“They were against AI and I’m like, ‘OK, you sound like the person that would have been against the drum machine when it came out.’ Or synthesizers, right? It’s a new tool for creativity. Some people are afraid of learning new things.”

As Dre’s interview went viral, several netizens flooded the internet with their mixed reactions to it. One of them said:

“Time to retire Dre”

Internet reacts after Dr. Dre shows support for AI usage in music

One of them wrote:

“This is what happens when old heads try to stay relevant, I’m surprised he’s still making music anyways.”

Another netizen slammed Dre, saying:

“Coming from a producer that has spent his career using other peoples work to make tracks. I don't have a problem with sampling, but he's the epitome of 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. Try listening to 'My name is' and then listen to 'I got the', no comparison.”

Another netizen commented:

“Very disappointing to hear the legends talking like this. REAL music must survive”

An internet user commented:

“Our society values talent, effort, and exclusivity. AI is none of those. Why would anyone pay for his AI slop when we've all "got slop at home" thanks to Big Tech shoving it in our faces for free? No one is special for using AI. No, not even him.”

Another X user wrote:

“Another legend that’s probably getting paid to push this narrative”

A netizen wrote:

“Dr. Dre using AI in music isn’t necessarily the death of creativity. It’s another tool, and the real question is how the artist uses it. AI can generate ideas, but taste, experience, emotion and the ability to turn those ideas into something meaningful still belong to the creator.”

Drake, Tyga, and Timbaland also use AI in their music

During the interview, Dr. Dre also mentioned Timbaland as a producer using AI. He also agreed that there are many other musicians using it. Drake actively used it for his songs like Taylor Made Freestyle.

Most recently, Tyga made headlines with the release of his album $TARFACE. His album even got a 0.0 rating from Pitchfork. Besides, Doja Cat also slammed Tyga for using AI.
