On October 19, President Trump demanded that New Mexico ‘immediately change’ its name to ‘New America.’ The POTUS claimed that changing the name would add ‘great value and prestige’ to the State. He went on to say that people of New Mexico should feel ‘prouder’ while saluting the American flag.

In his new Truth Social post, Trump said:

"New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico; we are the United States of America! The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag! Maybe even the Crooked Elections that New Mexico is known for would become honest again!"

The US Senator from New Mexico, Ben Ray Luján, responded to the president's latest post, saying:

"New Mexico’s name dates back hundreds of years, long before the United States even existed. It carries generations of history, culture, and rich traditions that continue to shape who we are."

He added that the people of New Mexico are proud of their name and they are not willing to change it.

"We are New Mexicans. We’re proud of our name, proud of our home, and we’re keeping both. Long after Donald Trump is out of office, we’ll still be New Mexico."

It isn’t the first instance of Trump suggesting a name change for New Mexico. Earlier, in September, the president shared a series of maps on his social media, where he renamed New Mexico as ‘New America.’ In addition, he also posted an AI-generated video of himself placing a sticker of ‘America’ over ‘Mexico’ on a sign board. The POTUS faced backlash for his suggestion last month.

Trump also changed the name of a gulf and a lake

During his second term, the president has already changed some names, one for the Gulf of Mexico and another for Lake Ontario.

On August 27, the POTUS signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake of America. The decision came amid growing tension between the US and Canada. The president's order will change the name in US documents, but it will have no authority in other countries, which cannot be forced to adopt a similar term.

Furthermore, he changed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America through an executive order in January of last year.

Most recently, he even suggested new names for the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. He said either he could call it Trump Ocean or Ocean of the Americas. The president announced this during his midterm rally in Tennessee on October 11.
