President Donald Trump is holding off on endorsing Vice President JD Vance as his preferred successor ahead of the 2028 presidential election, saying it is too early to make a decision.

The question came up in a White House Oval Office discussion with reporters about whether the president would support Vance if he ran for president.

Rather than commit to an endorsement, Trump said the two had not discussed the matter.

“I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it. You know, who would believe that?”

However, he said that they had to concentrate on the approaching mid-term elections before looking at the next presidential race.

“It’s early. We are very early right now. We have to get through the midterms. We’ll see how it goes.”

Nonetheless, the president showered Vance with praise as he stood just behind Trump. The POTUS told reporters:

“I’ll tell you this. He’s a very talented person, and he’s a very good person. But we’ve, literally, I don’t think we’ve ever talked about it.”

Meanwhile, Trump also discussed Vance’s prospects in an interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier in February 2025, where he talked about the chances of Vance.

Asked if he considered Vance to be his heir and the probable Republican nominee in 2028, Trump did not go quite that far.

“No, but he’s capable.”

Trump added that there are other capable people to do the job.

When Baier noted that Vance would likely seek an endorsement by the time the midterms arrived, Trump shifted the conversation to praise for his administration’s early performance.

“A lot of people have said that this has been the greatest opening almost three weeks in the history of the presidency.”

JD Vance says Trump will endorse him if he runs for president

The new comments came as Vance, during a separate interview with Mark Halperin, claimed that Trump would endorse him if he ran for president.

"I really have not made up my mind about what to do in 2028. I just haven't focused on it. We, you, and I have talked about that. Look, I think if I run, the president will endorse me.”

The vice president continued:

“I think I would get his endorsement, but I also think there's something to be said for people actually running their own race, and because the president's endorsement is so dispositive, you could absolutely see a scenario where the president says, ‘You know what? We need to let this race play out,’ and not like preemptively prejudge the results.”

Meanwhile, Vance clarified that he had not talked to the president about it yet.
