“We are standing with Trans people”: Wil Wheaton speaks out against Harry Potter series amid author J. K. Rowling's anti-trans stance

Wil Wheaton is fifty-four years old and has more than one million followers on Threads. Recently, his response to a question about the upcoming Harry Potter series got people talking. A user had asked their followers,

"Are we watching the new Harry Potter series?"

Wheaton's reply expressed support for trans people.

"As so many have said, f*ck no we aren't, we are standing with trans people," he wrote.

Not everybody felt the same way, though. Another user fired back,

"For me it's a big Yesssssssssssss!!!!!!"

The debate reflects the wider controversy the series has already attracted ahead of its release. J.K. Rowling, who is now sixty-one years old, has faced significant criticism from LGBTQ+ advocates over her comments about transgender people. As per a report shared by Variety, all seven of Rowling's books will each become their own season of television, from Sorcerer's Stone through to Deathly Hallows.

Casey Bloys shuts down questions about J.K. Rowling controversy during Harry Potter series announcement:

As per a report shared by Deadline back in April 2023, a member of the media asked Casey Bloys, who is the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, whether attracting talent to the series would be a challenge given Rowling's controversial comments. Bloys shut down the questions with a legit explanation.

"I don't have a comment on that today," he said.

"No, I don't think this is the forum to discuss that. That's a very online conversation, obviously very nuanced and complicated and not something we're going to get into," he added.

Warner Bros's focus, he made clear, was elsewhere.

"Our priority is what's on the screen. Obviously, the Harry Potter story is incredibly affirmative and positive and about love and self-acceptance. That's our priority — what's on screen," Bloys shared.

As for Rowling's involvement, he confirmed she would be close to the Harry Potter project.

"She's an executive producer on the show. Her insights are going to be helpful on that," he added.

Harry Potter veterans break from Radcliffe and Watson to defend J.K. Rowling against criticism:

Daniel Radcliffe, now thirty-seven years old, and Emma Watson have previously spoken out against Rowling's views. However, just as online reactions have been mixed, some of the older actors from the franchise have taken a different position from Radcliffe and Watson.

Jim Broadbent, who played Professor Slughorn in two of the films, told The Telegraph the backlash against the author was "really sad," sharing,

"I think JK Rowling is amazing. I haven't had to confront it myself, but I would support her in that, I think, if it came to it."

Helena Bonham Carter and Ralph Fiennes have also defended Rowling publicly. The criticism directed at her has included death threats on social media. Bonham Carter spoke to The Times in 2022, calling the backlash "horrendous," adding,

"She's not meaning it aggressively; she's just saying something out of her own experience."

Ralph Fiennes shared his thoughts with The New York Times that same year, saying,

"The verbal abuse directed at her is disgusting, it's appalling. I mean, I can understand a viewpoint that might be angry at what she says about women. But it's not some obscene, uber right-wing fascist. It's just a woman saying, 'I'm a woman and I feel I'm a woman and I want to be able to say that I'm a woman.' And I understand where she's coming from. Even though I'm not a woman."

Harry Potter series reveals its young cast alongside a star-studded supporting cast:

As per a report shared by Variety, HBO reviewed audition tapes from over thirty-two thousand children before landing on Dominic McLaughlin for the role of Harry Potter. Executive producer Mark Mylod and the casting team were going through between five hundred and a thousand tapes a day during the search. McLaughlin, who previously appeared in the Sky comedy Grow, will portray the young wizard who carries his trademark lightning bolt scar after surviving the death of his parents as a child.

His Hogwarts companions are equally fresh faces. Arabella Stanton, known for playing Matilda in the West End musical, will take on the role of Hermione Granger. Alastair Stout, who had no prior acting credits before landing the part, will play Ron Weasley.

The adults surrounding them are a different story entirely. John Lithgow takes on Albus Dumbledore, with Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Nick Frost, McLaughlin's co-star from Grow, joins as Hagrid. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will play Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon.

Francesca Gardiner serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer on the series, which is being made for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Mylod will also direct multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and David Heyman are among the executive producers.
