A Recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, world-renowned economist Alan Greenspan, after living a century, took his last breath at the age of 100 on June 22, 2026, according to NBC News.
Alan Greenspan, who was also the head of the Federal Reserve of America for more than eighteen years, had been married to senior journalist and political commentator Andrea Mitchell since 1997. While he was previously married to Joan Mitchell, Alan Greenspan never fathered any children.
The New York-based news anchor, Andrea Mitchell, who currently serves as the chief foreign affairs correspondent at NBC News, confirmed Greenspan's death in a statement. While he had a long and influential career, advising several American presidents during his lifetime, Alan Greenspan had a net worth of $20 million, as per Celebrity Networth.
As Andrea Mitchell announced the unfortunate news of her husband's passing, she expressed her feelings about the late economist in her statement, which read:
"Alan passed away at our home this morning at the age of 100 from complications of Parkinson’s disease. He was a giant of a man who helped shape the U.S. economy for decades under presidents of both parties, but was always honest in acknowledging his mistakes."
While Mitchell stated that her husband helped shape her life since the first time they met each other, Andrea also shared that Alan, who died due to Parkinson's disease, also made a huge contribution to shaping the American economy for years under leaders belonging to both the Republican and Democratic parties.
As Mitchell mentioned that the late former Federal Reserve chairman was also extremely fond of baseball, golf, and jazz music, she also touched upon how kind and intellectually accomplished an individual he was. However, Andrea's statement further added:
"To me he was my husband, who shaped my life from our very first date in 1984. He had ‘irrational exuberance’ for baseball, the Washington Commanders, tennis, golf and music, especially jazz. He will be remembered for his brilliance and his kindness. Being his life partner was the joy of my life."
Alan Greenspan paid tribute to his associate-turned-friend Ayn Rand

Born in 1926 in The Big Apple, Alan Greenspan, who attended New York University, from where he graduated with a bachelor's and a master's degree in Economics, as cited by NBC News, was inspired by the highly influential and prominent philosopher and author of The Fountainhead, Ayn Rand.
While he was an associate of Rand, who passed away in 1982, Greenspan eventually became a close friend of hers. As he was on the same page with her when it came to her ideas and beliefs, Alan took the opportunity to pay his respects to Ayn Rand in his 2007 book The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World. In the book, Greenspan wrote:
"Ayn Rand and I remained close until she died in 1982, and I’m grateful for the influence she had on my life. I was intellectually limited until I met her."
