Elon Musk is speaking out against Anne Hathaway over a speech she gave back in 2018. The X owner, fifty-five years old, responded to a post shared by marketing professor Gad Saad, who had offered a sharp critique of remarks Hathaway made at the Human Rights Campaign National Dinner in Washington, D.C., nearly eight years ago. Musk took to X, writing that

"She's just a marionette. Whoever wrote her speech is the real douchebag."

Hathaway, forty-three, had attended the September 2018 event as the recipient of the organization's National Ally for Equality award. The Odyssey star spoke to the crowd about her role in society and the myths she believed were doing real damage, saying

"With the exception of being a cisgender male, everything about how I was born has put me at the current center of a damaging and widely accepted myth. That myth is that gayness orbits around straitness, transgender orbits around cisgender, and that all races orbit around whiteness. And it is a myth that keeps money and power in the hands of the few, instead of being invested in the lives of the free."

As per a report shared by Us Weekly, Hathaway opened her speech by being candid about her state of mind at the time, telling the crowd

"I'm pretty shellshocked by what I see every day, by what I hear every day. And I really don't like to admit this but I get scared. I am just living the values my parents gave me. I'm loving you the way you deserve and yes, I am giving major side eye to anyone that thinks differently."

She went on to acknowledge the limits of her own perspective, adding

"I know I'm speaking in abstractions, and that there's privilege embedded in my ability to do so. I know that there are very real obstacles that block the path to true equality, and I know that removing them is easier said than done."

Hathaway also shared her belief that the LGBTQ+ community itself held the key to dismantling harmful myths, explaining

"I know that myths are destroyed by the same thing that creates them: a community."

The remark was met with near-immediate applause from the crowd. The criticism of Hathaway's speech on X was initially posted by Saad, sixty-one, who captioned his post with the text "Anne Hathaway is a Degenerate Narcissist," labeling her delivery as "self importance" and smug, while slamming her "every conceivable syllable" as "wrong."

Elon Musk then returned to the subject in a second X post, reiterating that Hathaway was "just reading the script someone else wrote," and arguing that "no critical thinking" had been used to write the speech.

Musk had also made headlines back in June over his reasons for getting into politics. The tech billionaire confirmed that his entry into the political arena was directly tied to his daughter Vivian Wilson, who is a transgender woman. Vivian is one of Musk's fourteen children. As per a report shared by Us Weekly, he shares Vivian with his ex-wife Justine Musk.

On May 31, Musk responded to an X post that showcased Wilson's latest modeling campaign, which also made light of her unintentional influence over her father's shift toward right-wing politics. The user wrote

"We should never forget that if not for Vivian, Elon Musk never would have gotten involved, never would have purchased Twitter, Kamala Harris would be President and the Left-wing would have total instrumental control over the construction of Skynet."

Musk replied simply,

"True."

Elon Musk has become an increasingly prominent figure in conservative U.S. politics in recent years. He campaigned for President Donald Trump's 2024 re-election and has frequently spoken out against transgender rights.

Vivian Wilson publicly came out as transgender in 2020 and confirmed shortly after that she no longer had a relationship with her father. During an interview with Cosmopolitan, Wilson hinted at coming to terms with their estrangement, saying

"There's not much I can do about it, so who cares? It's part of my story, but it's not the future of my story."
