Former South Korean President Yoon has been sentenced by a court in South Korea to 3 decades in prison on June 11 for charges linked to his ordering an incursion of military drones over North Korea. According to prosecutors, Suk-yeol's incursion move was aimed at creating a rationale for his unsuccesful martial law declaration in 2024.The Seoul central district court found the former President guilty of abuse of power, aiding the enemy, and saying he had conspired in the October 2024 drone incursion from the outset. Special prosecutors in April, 2026 had claimed that Yoon's effort to "fabricate wartime conditions" with drones had undermined state security. As per reports, Yoon Suk-yeol's martial law order had plunged Asia's fourth-largest economy into its deepest political turmoil in decades. Yoon had earlier denied any wrongdoing over the drone incursion.Yoon's lawyers argued that he neither ordered not approved the operation. His lawyers also argued that the operation was unrelated to martial law and was instead a response to months of North Korean launches which included balloons stuffed with rubbish being dropped at the border. North Korea had accused Seoul of flying drones over capital Pyongyang to drop propaganda leaflets three times in October, 2024. At the time, South Korea's defence minister, Kim Yong-hyun mentioned that they could neither confirm nor deny the allegations.More about Yoon Suk-yeol jailtimeYoon Suk-Yeol has been given 30 years in jail, a spokesperson for the Seoul Central District Court told the AFP news agecny.
