A feud between Miranda Lambert and Kacey Musgraves was talked about for years. As per a recent interview with NPR, Kacey Musgraves opened up about the rumored tension between her and the Wrangler's singer. The trouble started when a song Kacey Musgraves wrote ended up on Lambert's 2013 album Four the Record.
"It was gonna be my first single and I loved the song so much. I had been a staff writer for years at that point, writing for other people and had finally felt like I was collecting songs that felt like me that I didn't wanna pitch to anyone else," said Musgraves.
She explained that there was a lot of excitement around her and the song at that time. Someone pitched the song Mama's Broken Heart to Lambert without her knowing about it or giving permission. Lambert loved what she heard and wanted to record it.
Musgraves called it a tricky situation. She said she had co-writers who had to be thought about. Eventually, Miranda Lambert went ahead and recorded the song, and Musgraves had to write new material.
"And ultimately, I'm really glad that I did, because it forced me to write 'Merry Go Round,' which ended up making way more sense for me anyways, aesthetically and lyrically, to kick my whole thing off, versus 'Mama's Broken Heart.' And that ended up going No. 1 for her. So in the end, everyone won because I was able to let go of something," Musgraves shared.
Kacey Musgraves' grandmother helped both singers early in their careers before the feud began:

Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert both grew up in small towns in East Texas. As per a report shared by Saving Country Music, Musgraves, 37, came from Mineola, while Lambert lived in Lindale, and the two locations sit roughly 12 miles away from each other. Miranda Lambert is around five years older.
The two singers had an early connection through music as well. Musgraves' grandmother was a huge supporter when Kacey was young and helped book shows for her. Mrs. Barbara, as people called her, also gave Lambert a hand when she was starting. She let Miranda Lambert's parents know about the tryouts happening in Dallas for Nashville Star back in 2003. Miranda went to those tryouts, and her career started taking off after that.
Kacey Musgraves ended up reaching out to Lambert to work together on a song. As per a report shared by Page Six, the track Horses and Divorces will appear on her upcoming album, Middle of Nowhere.
"We'd lost touch for years and wouldn't consider each other friends. I saw her on Instagram one day, riding one of her horses, and I was like, 'Well, we ain't friends, but I guess we have two things in common, horses and divorces, that's for sure,'" Musgraves quipped.
Lambert divorced her first husband, Blake Shelton, in 2015, while Kacey Musgraves divorced her ex-husband Ruston Kelly in 2020.
Musgraves saw Lambert on social media and thought of a funny song idea. She reached out without planning it so they could write and record together.
"I was like, 'I know we've had our s–t over the years, but listen, we've at least got two things in common.' 'I'm not trying to be your friend. You got your life, I have mine. But I think this would be a pretty f**king funny song, and we should write it with Shane [McAnally],'" Musgraves said.
To their luck, Lambert said she wanted to do it. The two talked through old issues, laughed about things, and finished writing the song in just a few hours.
Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert teased a collaboration by posting a throwback video from 2013:

The two singers were aware that speculation about their relationship had been going on for quite some time now. Hence, they turned it into a promotion for their upcoming song.
Kacey Musgraves and Lambert both shared a video from the 2013 CMA Awards on their Instagram Stories. The video showed Lambert accepting her female vocalist of the year trophy, an award Musgraves had been up for as well.
Musgraves won new artist of the year earlier that same evening, which Lambert acknowledged while giving her speech.
"Kacey, congratulations on new artist, that was awesome. East Texas girls gotta stick together," said Lambert.
When the camera showed Musgraves watching from her seat, the Butterflies singer didn't look happy about what was happening. Musgraves shared the video first on Monday and included a message for Lambert.
"You knew that I'd said some things about you 🙄," wrote Musgraves.
Lambert reposted the same clip with a reply of her own.
"Well I've done my fair share of sh*t talkin' too," Lambert wrote.
Fans had assumed the Instagram posts meant the two were bringing their old drama back. However, once the full track list for Musgraves' upcoming album came out on Wednesday, people realized the singers had actually moved past their issues.
As per the report shared by Page Six, the collaboration is set to release on May 1.
