"What a hero he is": Batya Ungar-Sargon praises lone holdout juror who refused to side with others in Lindsay Clancy trial resulting in mistrial

Batya Ungar-Sargon has shared her thoughts on the jurors in the Lindsay Clancy trial. She praised the one male juror who held out, leading to a mistrial.

Lindsay Clancy strangled her three kids, Cora, Dawson, and Callan, at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023. She then allegedly slit her wrist and jumped out of the second floor, leaving her paralyzed. Her defense team has argued that she was dealing with postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible.

The jury in the case had deliberations for a few days and couldn't reach a unanimous decision. While 11 out of 12 jurors voted in favor of a not guilty verdict for Lindsay Clancy, one male juror refused to agree. This led to a mistrial, after which Clancy's lawyer filed an emergency appeal in the superior court.

The jurors and the foreperson have now opened up about their deliberations and voting. Three jurors spoke to NBC News about the holdout juror. An X (formerly Twitter) user named Colin Rugg shared a clip from the interview, as one juror said:

"He would not interact with us... He had the hardest time getting off the fact that Lindsay viciously killed her children."

Journalist and author Batya Ungar-Sargon quoted this post on Tuesday, September 8, and wrote:

"I hope the lone male holdout juror in the Lindsay Clancy trial knows what a hero he is to so many of his fellow Americans."

Eleven out of 12 jurors had voted in favor of acquittal for Clancy, claiming she was not guilty by reason of insanity.

What did the jurors and foreperson say after the mistrial in Lindsay Clancy's case?

In an interview with NBC 10 Boston, foreperson Roni Carlson shared her thoughts on the holdout juror. She alleged that he wouldn't listen to the other jurors and claimed that it frustrated the panel.

Carlson said:

"He admitted he had reasonable doubt and I started filling out the forms, I was so excited."

She added that the holdout juror then said:

"But I'm still not going to say that she's not guilty by reason of insanity."

Three jurors, meanwhile, said that there were arguments and even some name-calling during their deliberations. A juror named Paula Devlin labeled the holdout juror "very arrogant" and said:

“He really did not take anything that anybody said.”

Another juror named Kellie Farina said:

"We read to him on numerous occasions the definition of reasonable doubt from Judge (William) Sullivan's instruction. He actually said one day in the end, 'Why don't we have the judge come in and read it again?' And we were like, 'No, we have it in front of us.'"

Notably, Lindsay Clancy's attorney Kevin Reddington also urged Judge William Sullivan to remove the holdout juror on Friday, September 4. However, the latter said:

"What do you want me to do? Get a brass band?"

Sullivan repeated his instructions for the jurors and sent them back for deliberations multiple times. However, with no unanimous decision, a mistrial was ultimately declared.
