Rapper Jacquees was arrested in Hollywood, Florida, on Sunday, September 27, for alleged DUI (Driving under the influence). The authorities claim that he also allegedly resisted arrest and battered a police officer or a firefighter.
Jacquees, whose real name is Rodriquez Jacquees Broadnax, is a singer, rapper, and songwriter. He has released numerous R&B singles over the years and has also reached the Billboard Top 100 four times. He is arguably best known for his songs, B.E.D and You.
However, the singer faced trouble on Sunday, as he was arrested in Florida. According to IB Times, authorities claim that he received a call about a man passing out in his Jeep Gladiator. They reached the location and reportedly tried to wake him up.
The authorities also claim that they had to break a window, pull him out, and put him in a rescue vehicle. They further allege that he “became combative with first responders”.
According to Complex, Broadnax now faces three charges. They are driving under the influence, battery on a law enforcement officer, firefighter, or EMT, and resisting or obstructing an officer without violence.
The aforementioned IB Times report claims that the rapper has denied these allegations. He reportedly told a judge:
"They gonna have to show the bodycam footage."
Jacquees, whose net worth is $6 million (via Celebrity Net Worth), has had legal issues in the past as well. In 2023, a woman accused him of physical assault in Georgia, and he was arrested on simple battery and obstruction charges. He later paid his $3,700 bond and was released.
In 2018, he was arrested for alleged speeding and possession of a controlled substance. He has also been arrested and detained multiple other times.
Jacquees and Jermaine Dupri hit with copyright lawsuit from Home Team
Jacquees is also facing trouble in professional life at the moment. According to Billboard, Home Team has hit him and Jermaine Dupri with a lawsuit, filing it on September 21 in the Southern District of Florida. They allege that the duo used parts of their song for their 2023 track, Pick It Up, without consent.
Home Team was a 90s rap duo, comprising Van and Patrick Watler. They released the song, Pick It Up, in 1992 through Luke Records. They allege that Jacquees and Jermaine Dupri's track of the same name uses lyrics and melody from their song.
The lawsuit states:
“Dupri, Jacquees and Mass Appeal all knew or should have known that the song contained the lyrics and the melody/harmony from the original song. The Defendants, while working in conjunction with each other, have obtained, on information and belief, hundreds of thousands of dollars associated with the song from their exploitation, sale, downloads, licensing, radio airplay, synchronization and digital streaming in violation of Plaintiffs’ rights.”
The brothers are demanding that Dupri and Broadnax credit them as co-writers on the song and share the revenue for it. Moreover, they are demanding $150,000 in damages.
