Jameela Jamil has made headlines recently after her comments about Ariana Grande's physique drew significant controversy online. Grande had released the music video for her new song Petal. Following the backlash, Jamil posted a lengthy reply, saying people had missed the point of her message entirely and had turned her words into a "b-tch fight." She then revealed her own history with anorexia, writing that"I feel extremely bad for Ariana having almost died of anorexia myself. And it was only due to the people around me intervening INSENSITIVELY once I willfully ignored (and sort of enjoyed) their careful concern, that I survived."Jamil's comments reflected her personal concern. Silence is complicity when it gets this far," citing Karen Carpenter, the musician who died from anorexia complications in 1983 at thirty-two years old, as a point of reference.On Instagram Stories, she took things further, calling the situation a "trolley problem," the 1967 ethical thought experiment where pulling a lever saves five lives at the cost of one. As per Jamil, the same logic applied here, and she wrote that"If we comment on her body, we could harm her mental health, which would be awful and nobody wants that. If we don't comment on her body, we run the risk of normalizing that image to hundreds of millions of teenage girls, kids and even impressionable adults consuming her content."Jameela Jamil also shared that it has been ten years since her own anorexia recovery, adding that she still deals with the effects of malnutrition today. Back in December 2025, Glamour ran a report on comments Jameela Jamil had made via TikTok about what she called Hollywood's "aesthetic of emaciation." The conversation wasn't new even then. Ozempic, celebrity weight loss, shifting body standards, it had all already been simmering. As per the Glamour report, she said that"It is not body-shaming to comment on the fact that there is a rapid rise of the aesthetic of emaciation amongst women in Hollywood. Women in their 20s, 30s, 40s—50s, even—all of a sudden becoming so thin that you can see their ribs; you can see their hip bones jutting out…. No one's saying, 'Eww, they look disgusting….'
