The British journalist-turned-television broadcaster, Piers Morgan, a serious football enthusiast who is often seen sharing his opinions and views regarding the game on social media, took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle on July 20, 2026, and shared a post expressing his thoughts regarding the scuffle between Argentina's Leandro Paredes and Spain's Eric García during the 2026 World Cup finals, that took place in New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

Just moments after Spain won the 2026 World Cup finals by defeating Argentina 1-0, the situation suddenly took a different turn as Paredes, 32, lost his cool and became violent, starting a scuffle with García, 25, shoving him to the ground. As other players from both teams got involved in the brawl, Paredes, finding an opportunity, hit Spanish player Gavi, 21, pulling him down to the ground and striking him.

According to The Sun, Paredes immediately received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic, even though the match had already ended. While Argentina's rough and violent behavior towards Spain drew widespread online criticism, football enthusiasts globally condemned the actions, including British news anchor Piers Morgan, who called Argentina's behavior "disgusting" and its players "violent thugs." Piers Morgan wrote on X:

"Disgusting behavior by the Argentinians at the end, especially Paredes. Just a bunch of nasty violent thugs, and a disgrace to football. Never been so happy to see a team lose."

"This Parades should have been sent off at least 4-5 times today. Even in earlier matches, he should have been shown the red card. Argentine goons exposed right at the end of the tournament, at the biggest stage." noted an X user
"That’s how they always are—mocking, playing dirty, cheating, and being sore losers; that’s why even we Latinos find it hard to support them." written by an internet user
"Disgusting behavior, he didn’t get sent off by the referee and still decided to go ahead and pass he’s aggression on the winners. Says a lot about he’s personality and country. Spain won and the people are happy. Football was saved." wrote an X user
