Lil Durk was acquitted on all five federal charges in his murder-for-hire case stemming from a shooting incident in 2022 that aimed at killing rapper Quando Rondo.The Chicago rapper, whose legal name is Durk Banks, had been charged for allegedly having a plan to kill the other rapper, whose real name is Tyquian Bowman. The shooting attack, however, ended in the death of Tyquian Bowman’s cousin, Saviay’a Robinson, 24.The five charges against Lil Durk were conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire; use of interstate facilities to commit murder-for-hire resulting in death; conspiracy to commit interstate stalking; interstate stalking involving a dangerous weapon; and interstate stalking resulting in death.Lil Durk was accused of orchestrating the assault in response to the killing of his close friend and fellow rapper Dayvon Bennett, who performed under the name King Von. The prosecutor contended that the rapper had orchestrated the assault through his connections and money.Ian Yanniello, Assistant United States Attorney, informed the court during the closing arguments that Lil Durk was having people around him who could shoot to help him carry out the attack. The attorneys never accused Lil Durk of firing a gun during the shooting.The government’s case relied heavily on testimony from cooperating witnesses, including admitted shooters Kacey Hester, also known as OTF Jam, and Keith Jones. Kavon Grant, who used to be the rapper’s personal assistant, was another cooperative witness for the prosecution.The defense lawyer Brian Steel went further to discredit their testimonies, saying that they were informants looking for some advantage in their respective criminal matters.Further, he asserted that Grant had access to the resources of Lil Durk and had taken part in securing the cars and guns used in the crime.In the end, the jury did not accept the prosecution’s case and found Lil Durk not guilty on all five counts.Lil Durk, family “emotional” during the readingLil Durk appeared visibly emotional as the verdicts were announced in Los Angeles court. He reportedly had his head hung low as the clerk read out each verdict and afterwards shed some tears when the verdict was “not guilty.”The Chicago rapper’s mother also became emotional as India Royale, the wife of Lil Durk, hugged her. Some relatives of Lil Durk were also present in the courtroom.According to Los Angeles Magazine, the family members rejoiced following the verdict.“Durk’s entire family was emotional and did their best to remain calm during the reading, but gasps were heard throughout the gallery. Fans ran out of the courtroom before court closed and were jumping, cheering and hugging in the hall.”Meanwhile, according to the journalist Meghann Cuniff, the rapper is still not free since he will have to stay in jail until his second trial for similar racketeering charges.Two other defendants, Deandre Wilson and David Lindsey, were convicted on stalking-related charges but acquitted of the murder-for-hire counts.
