Son-in-law of the renowned basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, Chris Spatola, died at 47 on September 21, 2026. According to Us Weekly, the reason behind Spatola's unfortunate death has not yet been revealed. He is survived by his wife Jamie, who is Mike Krzyzewski's daughter, and their three kids, one son and two daughters.

A former athlete, Chris Spatola has worked at ESPN since 2015 as a basketball analyst. Before working as ESPN's studio analyst, Spatola worked as an assistant coach for his father-in-law, Mike, who was the head basketball coach for the men's team at Duke University for over four decades.

Born in New York, Chris Spatola was based in North Carolina's Durham, where he managed and took care of his basketball camps. He had also served in the US Army and was a decorated veteran.

According to Us Weekly, following Spatola's unexpected death, ESPN shared a statement on September 22 and paid tribute to him. While the statement shed light on how passionate and respectful he was when it came to the sport of basketball, it read:

"Chris Spatola brought a unique perspective to ESPN’s college basketball coverage, shaped by his experiences as a student-athlete, Army veteran, coach and broadcaster. He was thoughtful, prepared and passionate about the sport, earning the respect of colleagues, coaches, players and fans alike. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this difficult time."

Chris Spatola's family and colleagues pay tribute to the basketball analyst following his demise

After the announcement of Chris Spatola's unfortunate death, people including his in-laws and colleagues paid their last respects to him.

According to Us Weekly, Spatola's wife's family, the Krzyzewskis, shared a statement on September 22, in which they spoke quite highly of Chris and expressed how devastated they are after his passing. They also mentioned how loving and caring he was both as a father and a husband. The statement read:

"There are no words to adequately express our heartbreak over the loss of our beloved Chris Spatola. Chris served our country, was a devoted husband and father, and was such an important part of our family. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, thoughts, and prayers we have received during this incredibly difficult time."

The statement further added:

"We respectfully ask for privacy as our entire family, particularly Jamie and her three beautiful children, grieve and process this unimaginable loss."

Spatola's colleague at ESPN, Dick Vitale, a prominent basketball coach, took to his X (formerly Twitter) handle and paid tribute to him by writing:
