Who is Janell Shirtcliff? Eric Dane’s girlfriend shares tribute to late actor following his death

Days after Eric Dane died at the age of 53 after a fight with ALS, filmmaker and photographer Janell Shirtcliff broke her silence by posting a moving remembrance on social media. Shirtcliff and Dane had been dating on and off for three years. In 2025, he asked her to stand by him during his battle with ALS, and she has been by his side ever since.

In her emotional tribute, Janell Shirtcliff shared a bunch of photos and videos on her Instagram stories. The pictures and videos showed the immense love between the pair.

It included Dane wearing sunglasses as he smiled next to a palm tree, another was of Dane giving Shirtcliff a kiss on the head, then another of the two of them in a golf cart together, a black and white photo of Dane laughing, a candid image of Dane getting a tattoo, and finally a picture of Dane wearing a cowboy hat and smiling next to a horse.

Additionally, she posted video clips of them riding together and Dane with a young girl. This was her first public statement since his death on February 19.

Famous for his work on Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy, Dane had been suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).


Who is Janell Shirtcliff?

Janell Shirtcliff, a photographer and director based in Los Angeles, is best known for her modeling photography, dreamlike portraits, and colorful and style-driven landscape photography. She began posting her photographs on Instagram in 2011 and has since established herself in the creative community.

Some of her achievements include photographing the cover of Gay Times in March 2017 and directing the album artwork for Best Coast’s California Nights, which stars Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno. Her Instagram posts show that she has collaborated with such publications as People and Variety, among others, and has photographed a variety of celebrities, including Post Malone, Dua Lipa, Michelle Rodriguez, Adrian Brody, Jenna Ortega, and many others.

Shirtcliff has also ventured into film and creative direction other than photography.


Their relationship timeline

In 2025, it was reported that Dane and Janell Shirtcliff had been on-again, off-again for more than three years. A source had previously told Entertainment Tonight that they were “extremely close and mean a great deal to one another,” with Dane relying on Shirtcliff to be there for him during his health issues. The source revealed:

“The two have been in an on-and-off relationship for over three years and care deeply for each other. Eric asked Janell to be there for him during this time, and she wanted to show up for him.”

Dane and Janell Shirtcliff then made their first red carpet appearance together at the Countdown premiere in June 2025. It was also around this time that he revealed that he had dismissed the divorce filing from his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart.

Although they were still married, Dane and Gayheart had been separated for several years and were co-parenting their daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 14, with a very close, ongoing relationship. They often go on vacation together, and in 2023, Dane and Gayheart were seen holding hands in Mexico. In April of last year, Gayheart revealed that the two were still the “best of friends,” “really close”, and “great co-parents.”

In April 2025, Dane revealed that he had ALS, thanking his family for being there for him as he embarked on the next stage of his life.

Following his death, friends began a GoFundMe for his daughters, with a heavy donation from the Euphoria creator Sam Levinson.


Janell Shirtcliff's tribute came with no lengthy caption, but the pictures and videos spoke volumes of the love they had for each other, even in times of sickness and in health. Friends, cast mates and fans also shared their tributes for the actor.
