Republic Records has once again solidified its status as one of the music industry's most dominant forces after topping Billboard's 2026 midyear record label market share report. The record label recovered the top spot after a successful second quarter, fueled by blockbuster releases from Drake and Noah Kahan.

Who owns Republic Records?

The record label is owned by Universal Music Group (UMG), which is the world's largest music corporation. The record label was created in 1995 by brothers Monte and Avery Lipman as a subsidiary of MCA's Geffen Records, although its distribution was eventually transferred to Universal Records.

In 2000, Universal Music Group purchased a majority interest in the record label, adding it to the company's expanding label portfolio. In 2006, Universal Records and Republic Records combined to establish Universal Republic Records, which reverted to the Republic Records name in 2012.

Monte Lipman now serves as the label's Chairman and CEO, while Avery Lipman is the President and Chief Operating Officer.

Republic Records represents a diverse range of global artists, with names like Black Sabbath, Eddie Vedder, Glass Animals, Greta Van Fleet, Drake, Noah Kahan, Lil Wayne, Metro Boomin, Lorde, Kid Cudi, Taylor Swift, Jimmy Fallon, John Legend, Pearl Jam, Seth MacFarlane, Swedish House Mafia, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Nicki Minaj, Conan Gray, Jonas Brothers, Florence + the Machine, TWICE, TXT, and many more.

XO, Cash Money Records, Lava Records, Young Money, American Recordings, Mercury Records, Republic Nashville, Casablanca Records, and Boominati Worldwide are among the other significant imprints and initiatives overseen or partnered with by the label.

Billboard's 2026 Midyear Record Label Market Share Report states that Republic achieved an 11.43% market share, establishing it as the top label by album consumption units released in the past 18 months.

The label bounced back significantly after a sluggish first quarter, primarily due to the commercial triumph of Drake's three albums, mainly ICEMAN and Noah Kahan's The Great Divide, which ranked among the three largest albums launched in the second quarter.

Republic secured a strong lead over Atlantic Music Group, which came in second with an 8.50% current market share, whereas Interscope Geffen A&M took third place at 8.14%.

The resurgence also helped parent company Universal Music Group raise its overall current market share to 32.44%, widening its gap over competitor Sony Music, which achieved 27.41% during that time.

Achieving another No. 1 spot, the record label maintains its decade-long supremacy in the music industry, solidifying its status as one of the most successful and impactful labels.
