Susan Lucci was married to Helmut Huber, whom she has always referred to as the "love of her life." They have two kids and five grandchildren together. Lucci has opened up about grief following the death of her husband.

The soap icon married Helmut Huber on September 13, 1969, after a short but passionate romance. The two met when they were working at Long Island’s Garden City Hotel. At the time, Lucci was spending the summer at home from college, and Huber was the executive chef. The bond between them was evident despite their nine-year age difference and Lucci's initial engagement to another guy.

Later, Susan Lucci remembered that it was at her own engagement party, which took place at the same hotel where they first met, that she became aware of her feelings for Huber. Soon after, she called off the engagement and started dating Huber. In a matter of months, they became engaged and began a marriage that would last more than 52 years.

Susan Lucci has time and again credited Huber as her emotional anchor, confidant, and strongest supporter, both personally and professionally.

Who was Helmut Huber, and how did he die?

Hemut Huber was a former athlete who was once asked to join the Austrian ski team. In addition to being a chef, he also became a television producer. He was also Susan Lucci's manager and worked closely with her throughout her career.

One month after having a stroke, Helmut Huber died in 2022 at the age of 84. Lucci and his family were devastated by his passing. The family had released a statement through her publicist, Jessica Sciacchitano, after Huber's death:

"A family man, he was a loyal friend and loved them deeply."

The statement continued:

"With a roaring sense of humor, larger-than-life personality, and a practical problem-solver, he lived his life to the fullest. Mr. Huber who formerly raced motorcycles in Austria was a first-rate skier, and avid golfer, belonging to the Garden City Golf Club and Westhampton Country Club."

The statement concluded with:

"Helmut's passing is a tremendous loss for all who knew and loved him. He was an extraordinary husband, father, grandfather, and friend. The family kindly asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult time."

Susan Lucci on grief

Nearly four years later, Susan Lucci explained how she was coping with Huber's death:

“Frankly, when my husband passed away, I couldn’t even remember what I loved to do, nothing else mattered. It still feels very fresh and unbelievable. He was a larger-than-life presence with a big personality. Smart and strong. I miss him so much.”

She added later:

“He's worth missing. He was really, really the love of my life.”

Their children, Liza and Andreas Huber

Susan Lucci and Helmut Huber had two children throughout their fifty-three years of marriage. Their first child was born in 1975, Liza Huber, who went on to follow in her mother's footsteps and became known for her role as Gwen Hotchkiss in the soap opera Passions. Later, she gave up acting to pursue her career as an entrepreneur, starting the baby food company Sage Spoonfuls.

She is married to businessman Alexander Hesterberg III, and they share four children. The two had met each other in elementary school, reconnected later in life and got married soon.

More than a decade later, they gave birth to another child in 1988, Andreas Huber, who, like is father, is an athelete that too in different sports. Having won and reached the quarter-finals of the US Junior Amateur during his college days, he went on to join the Canadian PGA Tour and European Challenge Tour. After performing a stint on Wall Street, before joining the golf tours, he later co-founded a company called First Due, a digital company that helps municipal governments and fire departments.

In the year 2016, he got married to Courtney Velasco and had a boy named Wolf.

Susan Lucci enjoys spending time with her grandkids. In an interview with Closer Weekly in 2016, she said:

"I love the hugs and kisses! And Hayden running to me in her tutu shouting, 'Grammy! Grammy!' This warmth from the children is the best."

She even took to Instagram to share a photo of her and baby Wolf, a month after his birth.

Susan Lucci continues to pay tribute to the "love of her life." When she was honored with the Daytime Emmys Lifetime Achievement Award by the Television Academy, she thanked him. She concluded as she held back tears:

"The icing on the cake for me tonight is that my son Andreas is with me."

She continued:

"It means so much to me to have you here with me, honey. I feel your dad's presence here with us, and I thank my husband Helmet Huber because he had everything to do with me standing here tonight and receiving this incredible award."
