Netflix has parted ways with Bela Bajaria, its former Chief Content Officer. She was part of the 6% of the workforce laid off from the company this week.
According to Netflix, Bela Bajaria will be leaving after spending 10 years at the company in different roles. She was most recently the Chief Content Officer. The company announced that she will be replaced by Peter Rice. He has previously worked at 21st Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures, and Disney.
Announcing Rice's appointment, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO of Netflix, said:
“Peter is one of the most effective at-scale operators in the entertainment industry. His business acumen is sharp, his talent relationships are exceptionally strong, and his experience across TV and film is deep and broad."
"He understands what makes stories resonate, and he’s spent his career helping talent do the best work of their lives. I’m excited to welcome him to Netflix as Chief Content Officer as we continue to scale and deliver members more of the stories they love,” he added.
Peter Rice was previously the president of 21st Century Fox and CEO of Fox Networks Group. Moreover, he also helped head multiple iconic movies at Fox Searchlight Pictures, like Slumdog Millionaire, Little Miss Sunshine, and Juno.
He then moved to Disney in 2019 and was the chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment for the Walt Disney Company. He oversaw numerous shows like Modern Family, The Bear, The Simpsons, Only Murders in the Building, and many more.
However, Rice was ousted in 2022 and has been working as a producer on movies like Saturday Night and 28 Years Later. He will now replace Bela Bajaria as the Chief Content Officer at Netflix.

Netflix's co-CEO Ted Sarandos expresses gratitude to Bela Bajaria after her exit

Bela Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 after NBCUniversal let her go that year. She has served in multiple roles at the company and was most recently working on the live sports strategy on the streaming platform.
Following her exit, Ted Sarandos said in a statement:
“I want to thank Bela for a decade of dedication, innovation, creativity and leadership. She led enormous changes at Netflix. She helped broaden our content offering to include the large-scale expansion of unscripted programming and the launches of live events and sports, in addition to crafting and running a world class, global slate of films and series. I’m incredibly grateful for everything she’s done to help Netflix entertain the world.”
Initially, Bela Bajaria was brought in to work on the unscripted division at the streaming platform, along with licensing and studio co-productions. She then became the head of global TV in 2020 after Cindy Holland's exit, before being named the Chief Content Officer in 2023.
The streaming platform released numerous popular shows under Bela Bajaria's watch, including Squid Game, Stranger Things, Adolescence, Bridgerton, Frankenstein, and more. She also oversaw events like The Roast of Tom Brady and live NFL matches.
