Why was Christina Applegate hospitalized? Medical history explored after Emmy winner shares first video following recent illness

Christina Applegate shared an Instagram post on Monday, September 21. It was the first time she shared a video of herself after her recent hospitalization.

It was reported that Christina Applegate was hospitalized in late March this year. She later confirmed it through an Instagram post. She didn't reveal the reason for her hospitalization. However, the former actress had announced in August 2021 that she had been dealing with multiple sclerosis.

According to Cleveland Clinic:

"Multiple sclerosis (MS) damages the protective cover around nerves called myelin in your central nervous system. It can cause muscle weakness, vision changes, numbness and memory issues. While there isn’t a cure, treatment options can help you manage symptoms and slow disease progression."

On Monday, Christina Applegate shared a video of herself with a black chained hoodie and blue jeans. She thanked hair stylist and groomer, David Stanwell, in the caption and wrote:

"Fresh hair color, new weird spot on my cheek haha thank you @davestanwell for brightening up my cloudy day. Love you and love to you all out there"

Many of Applegate's former co-stars and colleagues expressed their support in the comment section. Chelsea Handler posted yellow heart emojis, Octavia Spencer commented fire emojis, while Aesha Jean wrote:

"Beautiful angel 💛💛"

Christina Applegate reportedly returned home from the hospital in August. She shared a picture on her Instagram account last week. It showed the decorations in her home with the alphabet banner that read:

“Yay, you’re home.”

She wrote in the caption:

"Meant to post this a while ago. My kid is so my kid hahah"

The Emmy-winning actress has one daughter, Sadie Grace LeNoble, with her husband Martyn LeNoble, whom she married in 2013.

The Married... with Children star has been open about her struggles with multiple sclerosis. She first announced the diagnosis in August 2021 via a post on X (formerly Twitter), writing:

"Hi friends. A few months ago I was diagnosed with MS. It’s been a strange journey. But I have been so supported by people that I know who also have this condition. It’s been a tough road. But as we all know, the road keeps going. Unless some a**hole blocks it."

On November 14, 2022, Christina Applegate received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She attended the event, marking one of her first public appearances since her announcement of her illness. She walked using a cane and appeared to get emotional during her speech.

The 54-year-old also stepped away from acting and revealed that she was diagnosed with MS while shooting for Dead to Me. She has said, however, that she is open to producing shows and movies. She also has a podcast with her friend Jamie-Lynn Sigler titled MeSsy.

In another rare public appearance, Applegate attended the 2023 SAG Awards in February 2023 with her daughter. In January 2024, she attended the Emmy Awards and presented the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy. She received a standing ovation when she took the stage with host Anthony Anderson.
