Why is Ellie Goulding suing her former managers? Live Nation ties lawsuit explained 

Ellie Goulding is taking legal action against her former managers. The thirty-nine year old singer has filed a lawsuit against Ben Mawson and Ed Millett of TaP Management, accusing the pair of concealing a significant conflict of interest throughout the course of their working relationship, one she claims ultimately benefited them at the expense of her career.

As per a detailed report shared by Variety, Goulding alleges that Mawson and Millett never disclosed that TaP's parent company, HNOE, had been partially and then fully acquired by Live Nation. She claims to have been completely in the dark about this arrangement, even as she was signing deals with Live Nation companies covering touring, merchandise and a documentary film.

Her legal claim states that her managers were contractually bound in a way that prevented them from taking any action that could reduce or damage their clients' business ties with Live Nation. Mawson and Ed Millett had managed Ellie Goulding from 2018 through 2025, collecting a twenty percent commission throughout.

The lawsuit gets specific about the nature of that conflict. As employees of Live Nation, the claim argues that Mawson and Millett had a personal stake in any dealings between Goulding and companies within the Live Nation group, a situation which left her interests in securing the best possible commercial terms potentially compromised.

The claim states,

"Mr. Mawson and Mr. Millett were subject to contractual obligations not to encourage any artist under their management to cease to do business with or reduce the extent of her or business with any company in the Live Nation group."

It continues,

"Mr. Mawson and Mr. Millett had a personal interest or duty in dealings between Ms. Goulding and companies in the Live Nation group which was in actual or potential conflict with the interests of Ms. Goulding in securing the best commercial terms with whichever promoter, merchandiser or other counterparty it was most advantageous for her to deal with."

As per the report shared by Variety, the suit is seeking unspecified equitable compensation and damages for what Goulding describes as breaches of fiduciary duty, along with other related entitlements.

Ellie Goulding moves on with new management:

Live Nation's ties to TaP Management stretch back further than Goulding's time with the company. As per a report shared by Variety, Live Nation acquired fifty point one percent of HNOE back in 2015 and, four years later, completed a full acquisition of the company.

The claim states that since 2015, Live Nation has exercised

"direct or indirect control of HNOE and has (through its subsidiaries) received dividends as ultimate controlling shareholder of HNOE."

Following the full acquisition, Mawson was named HNOE's CEO. That being said, both he and Millett continued to report directly to an individual designated by Live Nation's chief executive officer, a situation which placed them firmly within the company's chain of command throughout their time managing Goulding.

As for Goulding herself, she has since moved on. The singer has returned to Sarah Stennett for management and signed with WME for worldwide representation. She is also set to release her sixth studio album, I Know Too Much, on September 4.

Amid the lawsuit headlines, Goulding also made news this year for a candid interview with Nylon, where she opened up about a moment early in her career that nearly derailed everything. When asked whether someone had once pointed out her unique singing voice, the singer recalled a conversation that had the opposite effect entirely.

"I always remember this one conversation. This guy came up to me and said, 'You're a really good guitarist, but the voice… you should focus on guitar.' And it floored me. He was a musician, and I really looked up to him, so I was like, 'Well, that's it then.' And I remember he came up to me a year later and was like, 'Good to see you, how are you? How's things? Are you still singing?' I was like, 'No, I stopped,'" shared Goulding.

She was just seventeen years old at the time. One comment was all it took.

"It was only when I got to university that I found people that had grown up listening to singers like Björk and Imogen Heap and more distinct voices. That changed things. It felt like people were seeing me for the first time," she added.
